CLEARWATER - One of the truly great rock voices of all time, Joe Cocker, returns to Ruth Eckerd Hall with special guest Dave Mason, Thursday, Oct. 4, 8 p.m.
Cocker most recently performed at Ruth Eckerd Hall in 2009. Dave Mason performed in 2011.
For more than 40 years, Joe Cocker has been a major player in the music business. He’s released more than 20 studio and four live albums. His unmistakable bluesy soul voice is a musical trademark in its own right. He’s sold millions of records and had massive hit singles such as I’m So Glad I’m Standing Here (written especially for him by The Crusaders), Up Where We Belong, a duet with Jennifer Warnes that reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and earned him a Grammy for Best Pop Performance by a Duo and an Academy Award for Best Original Song.
Other classic hit songs include Unchain My Heart and You Are So Beautiful. He’s even received a Golden Globe and an OBE. Without any doubt, Joe Cocker is not only a true music legend but one of the most successful and popular singers of the last four decades. In January he released his first album for the Sony Music label Columbia Records, Hard Knocks.
Joining Cocker is special guest Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Dave Mason – a co-founder and original member of the band Traffic, Mason will be bringing his guitar and performing hits from Traffic along with those from his impressive solo career.
As the guitarist, a vocalist and one of the principal songwriters for the band, Mason penned Traffic’s biggest hits, Hole In My Shoe, which appeared on their first album in 1967. The following year, the band’s self-titled second album was released, that would contain another classic hit by Dave - Feelin’ Alright - a song that would eventually be covered by numerous artists. In 1970, he would have his first taste of solo success with the song, Only You Know and I Know and in 1977, Dave would have his biggest hit with We Just Disagree.
Over the years, Dave has performed and recorded with some of rock's greatest musicians including The Rolling Stones (Beggars Banquet), Eric Clapton, George Harrison (All Things Must Pass), Paul McCartney (Listen to What the Man Said), Fleetwood Mac, Cass Elliot and Jimi Hendrix. If you listen closely to All Along The Watchtower, that's Dave on acoustic guitar.
