ST. PETERSBURG - The Palladium Theater is adding a new monthly event to its slate of special events - Side Door Opera, with the premier show "A Night at the Opera Soprana, Liana Valente on Friday, Oct. 13, 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20.
Side Door Opera will be presented cabaret-style in the Stavros Great Room. It will be a comfortable, casual and intimate show, with night-club lighting, audience seating at round tables decorated with candles and snacks, a cash bar available throughout the show, and wonderful music, up close and personal.
"The acoustics are simply terrific. This is a format that has become very popular with the Palladium's Side Door Jazz series and we hope will prove to be an equally popular way to present operatic favorites," said Dar Webb, Palladium executive director.
Webb said, "Most of you know that the Palladium's great friend, Mark Sforzini, has been the artistic director for both of the Palladium's recent opera successes - "Madama Butterfly" in June, 2005, and the "The Barber of Seville" this year. Mark is also the Artistic Director for our productions of Die Fledermaus this December and La Boheme next June. Mark has undertaken to be the Artistic Director for Side Door Opera, so you can count on some truly great performances."
Valente will be accompanied by pianist Howard Kim. The night's program will feature some of opera's greatest hits. The strains of Mozart, Rossini, Puccini and many others will fill the Great Hall as Valente, the Palladium Theater's Bertha in this past summer's production of "Il Barbiere di Siviglia," performs favorites as "Quando men vo," "Una voce poco fa," and "The Jewel Song." as well as gems from modern American opera, including "Steal Me Sweet Thief" and "Ain't it a Pretty Night."
Tickets are available in person or by calling the box office at 727-822-3590, Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday, 1 to 5 p.m. and one hour prior to performances. Tickets also may be purchased at www.mypalladium.org.
