Tampa Bay Symphony presents season’s first series

TAMPA BAY - Since the founding of the Tampa Bay Symphony 21 years ago there has always been an air of excitement over the first concert series of each new season.
See and hear the more than 90 talented volunteer musicians of the Tampa Bay Symphony perform under the baton of musical director and conductor Jack Heller on Thursday, Oct. 25, 8 p.m., at Ruth Eckerd Hall, 1111 N. McMullen Booth Road, Clearwater.
Additional performances also are scheduled on Friday, Oct. 26, 8 p.m., at Mahaffey Theater, 400 First St. S., St. Petersburg; and on Sunday, Oct. 28, 4 p.m., at Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, 1010 MacInnes Place, Tampa.
The concert features soloist Bienvenido G. Yangco performing the southeastern U.S. premiere of Sir Charles Villies Sanford’s Clarinet Concerto.
Yangco, born in the Philippines, began studying the clarinet at the age of 9. In 1970, he was awarded the John D. Rockefeller III Fellowship Grant which enabled him to study at the Yale School of Music.
The concert also will feature the Sunshine Brass Band, under conductor James F. Cheyne, performing “An English Twist.” Also on the program will be William Walton’s “Orb and Sceptre March” written for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II and Ottorino Respighi’s “Pines of Rome.”
Tickets are $15. The Tampa Bay Symphony makes free concert tickets available to all public, private and home-schooled students and music students. Call Jim Parady at 442-3696 by Monday, Oct. 22 with ticket requests.
