TAMPA - WMNF and BAAMO are at it again - revolutionizing the local music scene and speaking truth to power with a groundbreaking upcoming concert and cd release party on Saturday, Nov. 4, noon to midnight, during a celebration of free speech at Skipper's Smokehouse, 910 Skipper Road, Tampa.
More than 30 local bands and solo performers will perform both original and classic protest songs at the event being billed as "a tribute to the Songs of Protest, Dissent & Elect Dysfunction - A pre-election extravaganza of political music."
Scheduled events include the Rabble-rouser Hour, which is an open mic for local singer-songwriters who want to perform their own personal protest soung. Sign up begins at noon, first come, first served. The Rabble-rouser hour is scheduled between noon and 2 p.m.
A hootenanny is scheduled between 5 and 8 p.m. A hootenanny is a gathering at which folksingers entertain often with the audience joining in. There is much music and dancing and food. This was a phenomenon that came about in the 40s and 50s out of the labor, civil rights, and other people's struggles and was carried into the college and then urban folk scene of the late 50s and early 60s. It was meant to teach, inspire, entertain, and offer a participatory dialogue between performer and audience and usually related to contemporary social issues.
The first 200 people that arrive before 3 p.m. get the protest package - a special limited edition Power to the People bumper sticker, the Power to the People poster and commemorative program. Plus some of the best performers will be on stage in the early afternoon, including Geri X, Lorna Bracewell, Amandla Tunesmith, Addek and The Crabgrass Cowboys to name a few.
Many of the bands performing are also on the CD, Power to the People: A Tribute To Free Speech. The CD, co-produced by WMNF and BAAMO, has fourteen tracks dedicated to freedom-of speech, thought, idea and action.
The highlight of the CD (and presumably the concert) is the all-star line up rendition of John Lennon's Power to the People, featuring local band Auditorium, and the singers from more than a dozen bands. It is both a celebration of music and of community.
Proceeds from the Power to the People concert and CD will go to two nonprofit organizations that support music and the arts in greater Tampa Bay: BAAMO and WMNF.
BAAMO, Bay Area Arts and Music Organization, is a volunteer-powered nonprofit dedicated to supporting this area's great live, original music and arts scene.
WMNF 88.5 fm is a non-commercial community radio station that celebrates local cultural diversity and is committed to equality, peace and social and economic justice.
Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. Tickets are available at Skipper's Smokehouse, WMNF and its ticket outlets, or on line at www.wmnf.org.
