LARGO - Back in historic old England, the ladies in charge of the spinning wheels took the 12 days of Christmas off to tend to holiday cooking and baking. But come Roc Day (also know as St. Distaff’s Day), the pots and pans went back in the cupboards and the women took up their places at their spinning wheels again.
The Pinellas Weavers Guild gets back to their spinning as well, with a special Roc Day celebration on Saturday, Jan. 9, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Heritage Village.
A roc is the distaff that holds the fiber on a spinning wheel.
Guild members will be conducting spinning demonstrations in the Daniel-McMullen House at Heritage Village, and vendors will be selling fiber (wool, cotton and alpaca) and spinning equipment at Saturday morning’s Market in the Park.
Heritage Village, operated by Pinellas County government, is a 21-acre living history museum located in the heart of Pinellas County at 11909 125th St. N. in Largo. It is adjacent to Pinellas County Extension and the Florida Botanical Gardens.
Heritage Village is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. It is closed on Mondays, Tuesdays and major holidays.
Heritage Village brings to life more than 150 years of rich and colorful local history in a picturesque, cool landscape of palmettos and pine trees. More than 25 buildings and structures are restored, authentic and full of fun. A new, self-guided EnterAction adventure welcomes families and reveals secrets of the past.
