Taste of Pinellas promises great food, great music

ST. PETERSBURG - It’s about the food. It’s about the tunes. It’s about the kids. Taste of Pinellas is May 30-June 1 at Vinoy Park in St. Petersburg.

Admission and parking free. Hours are Friday, 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.; Saturday, noon to 10 p.m.; and Sunday, noon to 7 p.m.

Organizers promise plenty of great food from 50 participating restaurants serving up their specialties. Diners purchase sheets of tickets for tastes of their favorites. Tickets can also be used for kid’s activities and interactive games.

While parents graze through the food booths throughout the weekend, youngsters will find plenty of activities in the Kids Zone. Activities include an inflatable water slide and bounce houses. Kid’s Zone entertainment includes popular DJ Rob Snyder with music and games.

The Taste Beer Garden offers a smorgasbord for the beer connoisseur. This year’s Beer Garden features nine import and specialty beers including: Grolsh, Tennent’s, Kirin Ichiban, Beach Bum Blonde Ale, Widner Hefeweizen, Red Hook Blonde Ale, Kona Fire Rock Ale, Kona Long Board Lager and Kona Shock Top.

A Taste of Pinellas presented by BB&T offers free national acts on the main concert stage. On Friday, the stage features heart-throb, musical artist and actor, Rick Springfield who is best known for hits such as “Jessie’s Girl," “I’ve Done Everything For You,” “Love is Alright Tonite” and “Don’t’ Talk to Strangers”. on Saturday, enjoy the Blues sensation, Jonny Lang singing “Lie to Me,” “Breakin’ Me,” “Darker Side” and “There’s Gotta Be a Change.” On Sunday, Eddie Money returns to the Taste by popular demand to perform hits such as “Think I’m In Love,” “Two Tickets to Paradise,” “I Wanna Go Back” and “No Control.”

Sunday will see an early start to Taste festivities for a special group of All Children’s patients and their families. The event is a “Rehab Round-Up,” a reunion for kids who have benefited from rehabilitative services including speech therapy, audiology services, occupational, or physical therapy.

The 2008 Rehab Round-Up takes place in the Kids Zone area from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Guests will enjoy a variety of games and activities, a free "Chuckwagon Lunch" and visits from special guests, including popular PBS children's character, Arthur courtesy of Great Explorations Museum. If you know of a child who is, or was, receiving rehabilitative services and would like to participate, please call 727-767-2800 for more information.

A free shuttle service will be available at the following pick-up and drop-off locations at Bayshore Drive and Fifth Avenue South; Fourth Avenue South and First Street; Second Avenue South and First Street; First Avenue North and First Street; and Third Avenue North and First Street. The shuttle will run approximately every 20 minutes from 4:30 to 11 p.m. on Friday; 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday; and from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday. Some shuttle buses will be available to accommodate physically challenged individuals.

Taste of Pinellas is staged in conjunction with the All Children’s Hospital Telethon, broadcast live on WFLA-TV News Channel 8, May 30-June 1. Cyndi Edwards and Dave Nemeth, hosts of Channel 8’s Daytime program, will be on hand during Sunday’s festivities with live updates on the action.

All Children’s Hospital is currently undergoing a major expansion program.

"It's an exciting time for All Children's Hospital and the families we are privileged to serve. In 18 months a brand new hospital will be completed just blocks from the present site. More than $3 million has been raised through A Taste of Pinellas ... helping us build more miracles for the future", said Joel Momberg, All Children's Hospital executive vice president and Taste originator.

Proceeds from Taste of Pinellas benefit All Children's Hospital.
