Oktoberfest, featuring live music, family fun and international fun, is Saturday, Oct. 13, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., at Kolb Park.
INDIAN ROCKS BEACH – Mayor R.B. Johnson considers Oktoberfest on the Beach to be a kickoff for several events starting in the fall in Indian Rocks Beach.

Oktoberfest, featuring live music, family fun and international fun, is Saturday, Oct. 13, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., at Kolb Park.

“We don’t have much going on in the summer, but starting basically from October going all the way through the spring we have a series of different festivals in the city that are real popular that people volunteer for,” Johnson said.

Oktoberfest is a good opportunity for people in Indian Rocks Beach to get together and see friends they haven’t seen in a long time, Johnson said.

“The weather usually is pretty good for Oktoberfest,” Johnson said. “So it’s a very lively event.”

The event is a fundraiser for two local civic organizations, Action 2000, which uses proceeds from the event for projects that beautify and improve the Gulf Boulevard corridor, and the Indian Rocks Rotary Club, which supports numerous projects in the schools, the Girls Scouts, Boy Scouts, the ALS Association and other organizations.

Action 2000 pioneered the Oktoberfest event more than 11 years ago as a fundraiser geared to increase community involvement and “be a fun event for all ages to enjoy in our beautiful beach community,” said Tricia Priest, who handles public relations for Action 2000.

“From simple beginnings this event has flourished and become a favorite annual event with over 5,500 people attending. Thanks to the cooperation of our city of Indian Rocks Beach, this event exposes so many people to our great beaches, businesses and allows visitors to see the great places they can visit and vacation,” Priest said.

“All the hard work from dedicated and spirited volunteers, and support from local businesses make it a huge success. We benefit by hearing and enjoying all the people who love to come to our event each year, and to know that all the monies we raise will be used for beautification projects and charity donations on behalf of the two non-profit organizations, Indian Rocks Beach Action 2000 and our co-sponsor Rotary Club of IRB,” Priest said.

The event provides an opportunity for the entire family to be involved, with activities for children such as slides and bounce houses.

Of course, there’s wife-carrying contest, stein-carrying contest and keg throwing contest.

“All these things that people are interested in because they are a lot of fun, and everybody gets together and either participates or watches,” Johnson said.
