Fall ushers in outdoor events

Looking for some fun in the sun in the coming months?
Following is a list of some of Florida’s finest festivals, fairs and unique outdoor events found right here in the Tampa Bay area.
• Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 1 and 2 – The 21st annual Ruskin Seafood Festival, at E.G. Simmons Park, 2401 19th Ave. N.W., Ruskin. Hours will be Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Festivities will include food vendors serving seafood and other specialty food items, fine crafts, boat show, children’s area with activities and live entertainment. • Saturday, Nov. 7 – The Pinellas County Market in the Park, at Heritage Village, 11909 125th St., Largo. Sponsored by the Pinellas County Historical Society, the event will kick off its third season with farm fresh produce, natural products and gardening items. Admission is free and food and beverages will be sold. The market will continue through April 17.
• Saturday, Nov. 7 – The eighth annual Safety Harbor Wine Festival, 5 to 11 p.m., on Main Street, in downtown Safety Harbor. Presented by Dimmitt Cadillac, the event will feature food, arts and crafts, wines from all over the world and live entertainment. Proceeds will benefit local charities. • Saturday, Nov. 7 – Zoofari, 7 to 11 p.m., at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo, 1101 West Sligh Ave., Tampa. The event will feature live entertainment and more than 60 area restaurants serving up signature dishes. Entertainment will include performances by Sister Hazel, Nate Najar, Jason Young, Alan Darcy and the Vodkanauts. Admission is $80 in advance, $85 the day of the event. Proceeds benefit the zoo. • Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 14 and 15 and 21 and 22 – Sarasota Medieval Fair, at Sarasota County Fairgrounds, 3000 Ringling Blvd., Sarasota. • Saturday, Nov. 21 – The Plant City Pig Jam State Barbecue Championship, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Randy Larson Softball Four-Plex, 1900 South Park Road. Individuals will compete in the professional, amateurs and kids barbecue competition. The event will feature live entertainment from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Parking cost is $5 and admission is free. • Friday through Sunday, Nov. 27 through 29 – Gems, Jewelry and Bead Show, at the Coliseum, 535 Fourth Ave. N., St. Petersburg. The show will feature dealers from across America offering a variety of gems, jewelry, crystals, minerals and beads for show and sale.
• Nov. 27 through Jan. 3 – Trees and Traditions, at Heritage Village, 11909 125th St. N., Largo. Admission is free. Heritage Village, the county’s living history museum, welcomes visitors to tour its beautifully decorated homes and galleries. • Thursday through Sunday, Dec. 3 through 6 – The 32nd annual St. Petersburg Power and Sailboat Show, at Progress Energy Center for the Arts Mahaffey Theater Yacht Basin and Albert Whitted Park, 400 First St. S., St. Petersburg. The outdoor show will showcase the best of both the boating and sailing worlds, exhibiting the largest, most varied selection of power and sailboats. Featuring a floating dock marina, the show will include family cruisers, high-performance wakeboard boats, fishing boats, sailing yachts and personal watercraft. Visit www.showmanagement.com.
• Saturday, Jan. 9 – Southwest Florida Heritage Festival, at Crowley Museum and Nature Center, 16405 Myakka Road, Sarasota. The event allows attendees to travel back in time to experience the life of Florida pioneers. Visitors will enjoy pioneer craft and trade demonstrations, listen to storytellers and watch re-enactors including Seminole Indians, conquistadors and working cowboys. Visit www.cmncfl.org.
• Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 16 and 17 – The 30th annual Brooksville Raid Re-enactment, on Highway 50 West at the Sand Hill Scout Reservation, Brooksville. The event is a re-creation of a Civil War battle that happened in Hernando County in July 1864. More than 1,500 re-enactors gather for the annual event, featuring 28 cannons, 60 horses and more than 50 sutlers. Visitors will tour authentic confederate and union camps and see how soldiers and civilians lived during the Civil War. • Saturday, Jan. 30 – Pinellas Folk Festival, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Heritage Village, 11909 125th St. N., Largo. Admission is free. Dozens of the area’s premier folk musicians will perform. Visit www.pinellascounty.org/heritage/events_folkfest.htm.
• Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 27 and 28 – Battle of Ballast Point, Fort De Soto County Park, 3500 Pinellas Bayway S., Tierra Verde. The 97th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Re-enactment Regiment, in cooperation with the Pinellas County Parks Department and Fort De Soto County Park, will host an American Civil War weekend encampment and historical battle re-enactment. • Saturday, March 27 – Dunedin Highland Games, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Highlander Park, Dunedin Community Center, 1920 Pinehurst, Dunedin.
