Beach Theatre announces upcoming movie lineup

ST. PETE BEACH – Beach Theatre will present a variety of films through August. Scheduled events and screenings include the following:

• “Crazy Love” – Aug. 17 through 23, 1 and 3:15 p.m. This documentary depicts a one-of-a-kind, bizarre tale of true love.

• “Wattstax” – Aug. 17, 7 and 9:30 p.m. Director Mel Stuart’s film documents the Wattstax festival which took place on Aug. 20, 1972, at the Los Angeles Coliseum. The cult favorite features performances by the Staple Singers, Albert King, Little Milton, Isaac Hayes and Rufus Thomas. A disc jockey from WMNF will spin music before and after the shows.

• “The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T. – Aug. 18, 10 a.m. The only feature film ever written by Theodor Seuss Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss, tells the story of a sinister piano teacher who appropriates 500 kids to play his gigantic piano.

• “The Monterey Pop Festival” – Aug. 18, 6 and 9 p.m. Captured in this footage of the 1967 festival that kicked off the Summer of Love are performances by Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Otis Redding, Simon and Garfunkel and Ravi Shankar.

• “The Big Lebowski” – Aug. 19, 6:15 and 9 p.m. Audience members are encouraged to come wearing bathrobes or bowling shirts to the screening of this Coen brothers classic. The theater will be serving White Russians in honor of the film’s central character, Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski.

In addition, Beach Theatre will host “The Reel Truth,” a series of documentaries to benefit WMNF. Presentations will include:

• “The U.S. vs. Al-Arian” – Aug. 20, 6:30 and 9 p.m.

• “War Made Easy” – Aug. 21, 6:30 and 8:30 p.m.

• “The U.S. vs. John Lennon” – Aug. 22, 6:15 and 8:30 p.m.

• “Shut Up and Sing” – Aug. 23, 6 and 8:15 p.m.

The theater also presents “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” on Saturdays at midnight with the live cast, Interchangable Parts.
