ST. PETERSBURG – American Idiot, the musical based on Green Day’s groundbreaking album and rock opera, opens for one night, Tuesday April 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the Mahaffey Theatre.
Called “the first great musical of the 21st century” by The Toronto Star, American Idiot is described by The New York Times as a “wonderfully raucous and gorgeously wrought art opera … emotionally charged and as moving as anything on Broadway!”
The show is presented by The Bill Edwards Foundation for the Arts.
American Idiot, Green Day’s studio album, was released in 2004 and has sold more than 14 million copies worldwide and won a Grammy for Best Rock Album. The musical received two Tony Awards in 2010 for best set design and lighting design and also was nominated for Best Musical. The original Broadway cast recording received the 2010 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album.
American Idiot is the story of lifelong friends forced to choose between their dreams and the safety of the suburbs. Smash hits include “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “Holiday,” “Give Me Novacaine,” “Too Much Too Soon” and “21 Guns.”
