West Side Story is the Romeo and Juliet story as reinterpreted by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim. Set in the Hellís Kitchen neighborhood of New York City in the mid-1950s, the musical throbs with passion.
The rivalry between the Polish-American Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks, two teenage street gangs, underscores the love story. Tony, one of the Jets, falls in love with Maria, the sister of Bernardo, the leader of the Sharks. The sophisticated music, extended dance scenes, and focus on social problems combine to make this one of the greatest musicals ever written.
The SPOís production team plans to re-create the original Jerome Robbins dances sequences.
