Article published on Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2007 |
GULFPORT - The Salerno Theatre Co., "Tampa Bay's Musical Theatre Company," kickS off its fourth full Broadway Musical Season with one of the longest-running musical in the world, "The Fantasticks," running Sept. 6-16, at the Catherine Hickman Theatre in Gulfport.
"Try To Remember" a time when this romantic charmer wasn't enchanting full audiences at New York's Sullivan Playhouse, originally starring the loved and legendary Jerry Orbach as "El Gallo."
At the heart and soul of this musical classic's breathtaking poetry and subtle theatrical sophistication is a purity and simplicity that easily transcends all cultural barriers.
The result is a timeless fable of love that manages to be nostalgic and universal at the same time. In a clever reverse of the Romeo and Juliet story, two fathers, in a well meaning attempt to spark romance between their two children, devise a scheme in which they pretend to feud.
What unfolds is a timeless story of innocence undone, illusion lost and wisdom gained; a story of growing up and facing the sometime cruelty of the real world and in the process, finding that love was waiting in your backyard.
Show times are Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m. with Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. Ticket prices are $25 for adults and $22 for aeniors (65+). Group rates are available for parties of 10 or more.
Tickets are available at the box office 813-926-9175 or online at www.SalernoTheatre.com.
