Playwrights can find fame at 10 X 10 Play Festival
Article published on Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006
PINELLAS COUNTY - American Stage Theatre Company and Largo Cultural Center are seeking submissions for 10 minute plays to be performed at the 10 X 10 Play Festival set for January 2007.

Plays will be accepted through Dec. 1 (postmarked). Only the first 250 submissions will be accepted, so it is suggested to submit entries early.

Ten winners will be announced Jan. 1, 2007 and posted on the American Stage Theatre Company and Largo Cultural Center Web sites. Winning plays will be presented in staged readings in the Largo Cultural Center's Tonne Playhouse.

"The 10-Minute Play challenges writers, directors and actors to develop characters and tell a story in a compacted amount of time," said T. Scott Wooten, chairman for the event. "Performed together, the plays will allow audiences to taste a plethora of styles, genres, characters and situations making the theatrical experience exciting and full of variety."

The Theme of the Festival is "Anniversaries: the marking of time of a notable event." All submissions must incorporate this theme into their narrative.

Ten 10 minute plays will be chosen for the Festival, and each winning author will receive $100.

"We are seeking a theatrical potpourri, that is, any style and genre of entertainment from dramatic, mystery, comedic, etc. - you have 10 minutes," said Wooten. "After all, anything can happen in 10 minutes."

Authors of winning plays agree to allow American Stage Theatre Company and Largo Cultural Center produce a staged reading of their play. American Stage Theatre Company and Largo Cultural Center agree to pay winning authors $100 per play that wins and an author complimentary ticket during the run of the Festival; this is for play authors only.

Playwrighting students involved in American Stage Education programs will be a part of the Festival's play selection and performance process. Talkbacks with actors, directors, and playwrights (as available) will take place with student writers, and students will also assist in stage management and assistant direction. Students will participate on a volunteer basis as part of their educational curve.
