CLEARWATER - The Theatre Grapevine presented the 2013 STAR Awards Ceremony Sept. 29, in Matheos Hall at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Clearwater.
“It takes a whole community to ‘pull off’ a gala like the STAR evening,” said Dee Crews, publisher of Theatre Grapevine. Her comments appear in the October 2013 issue of the publication. “This may be the first time that every one of our theaters won at least one award.”
STAR Award ballots were distributed over the summer and the votes tallied. The winners were celebrated at the annual ceremony, which serves to showcase the area’s best and brightest thespians. STAR stands for Suncoast Theater Award Recipient.
The Theatre Grapevine, a nonprofit news magazine serving the community theaters of Florida’s Suncoast, sponsors the STAR Awards. The awards recognize outstanding achievements in local theater.
Eight O’Clock Theatre earned 11 awards, including Favorite Musical Production for “The Producers,” Favorite Actor in a Musical for Ben Taylor in “The Producers” and Favorite Actress in a Musical for Amy Dobbert in “Forbidden Broadway.”
West Coast Players took home seven awards, including Favorite Supporting Actor in a Comedy for Sam DePriest in “The Boys in the Band,” Favorite Director in a Drama for Tom Costello in “The Boys in the Band” and Favorite Comedy for “The Red Velvet Cake War.”
