The Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company performs its breathtaking modern dance Between Us at The Mahaffey on Sunday, Nov. 11, 7 p.m.
ST. PETERSBURG - Now in its 29th year, the company that shaped the evolution of contemporary dance, the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company performs its breathtaking modern dance Between Us at The Mahaffey on Sunday, Nov/ 11, 7 p.m.

Featuring rarely available pieces from the company’s repertoire created over a decade-long span beginning in the late ‘80s, Between Us focuses on the bond between people, painting intriguing portraits with simple, beautiful dances.

Founded as a multicultural dance company in 1982, the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company was born of an 11-year artistic collaboration between Bill T. Jones and Arnie Zane.

During this time, they redefined the duet form and foreshadowed issues of identity, form, and social commentary that would change the face of American dance. Recognized as one of the most innovative and powerful forces in the modern dance world, the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company has created more than140 works performed in more than 200 cities worldwide.

Between Us compiles some of the most memorable pieces from Jones and Zane’s influential partnership and provides a satisfying look at the core of the Jones/Zane style: dancers with individual personalities, body types and backgrounds; partnering that is unconventional and unexpected; and a choreographic palette that draws from classical ballet, postmodern abstraction and arrangements of gesture and shape influenced by film and photography.

Bill T. Jones, a multi-talented dance master, has received major honors including the coveted MacArthur Genius Award and multiple Tony Awards for his choreography in Spring Awakening and Fela! The Dance Heritage Coalition called Jones an “irreplaceable dance treasure.” Arnie Zane, the late partner of Jones, was a photographer, choreographer and dancer. Zane’s interest in the body and visual design is apparent in the choreography that the duo created.
