CLEARWATER – Countryside High School Drama and Thespian Troupe 900 will present “West Side Story” Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 19, 20 and 21, 7 p.m. with an extra matinee on Friday at 3 p.m. at the school, 3000 State Road 580. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens.

The troupe includes students from Dunedin, Palm Harbor, Safety Harbor, Clearwater, Tarpon Springs and East Lake.

For tickets or more information, call Kim Florio at 725-7956, ext. 2063 or e-mail the Drama Boosters at boosters@chstroupe900.com.

The music is stunning, the choreography iconic and the message more important than ever. Jerome Robbins, Arthur Laurents, Leonard Bernstein, and Stephen Sondheim’s legendary masterpiece brilliantly illustrates the devastation and futility of gang violence.

New York. The 1950’s.

The Jets, a tough gang of Americans looking to protect their Manhattan turf, hold a very public rivalry with the Sharks, a gang of Puerto Rican immigrants trying to find greater opportunities in America. Tensions erupt over word of a rumble that will occur soon between the two groups, and Tony (the former leader of the Jets) wants nothing to do with the violence. At a dance that night, he falls head over heels in love with Maria, a beautiful girl seen dancing on the other side of the gymnasium. Conflicts arise when Tony finds out that Maria is the sister of Bernardo, the charismatic leader of the Sharks. The two lovers attempt to find a better place for themselves in this beautiful adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet.
