Brooker Creek preserve schedules February programs

PINELLAS COUNTY – The Brooker Creek Preserve Environmental Education Center will host a series of programs in February.
John Gurbac’s Fractals and Nature will be on display through Feb. 27. Gurbac’s paintings evolved from observations of the environment both natural and human-made, and his study of fractals.
The term fractal describes shapes that contain little copies of themselves within. In his paintings, Gurbac shows the similarity and contrast between natural and human-made forms.
This focus has led him to develop imagery that reflects on a range of issues from social and environmental concerns.
Other scheduled programs will include:
• Saturdays, Feb. 2, 16 and 23 – Guided hikes, 9 to 11 a.m. Led by staff members, participants will look at how the land has changed over time and discuss the ecological footprints left by those changes. Sturdy closed-toe shoes are a must and water and a hat are recommended. All ages welcome, though children under 6 may find this hike challenging. Free.
• Sunday, Feb. 3 – Young naturalist walk, 10:30 a.m. to noon. Sturdy closed-toe shoes and water are a must. A hat, sunscreen and insect repellent are recommended. Recommended for families with children of all ages. Free.
• Wednesdays, Feb. 6 and 27 – Family night hikes, 7 to 8:30 p.m. Staff will take guests on a nocturnal hike to look and listen for creatures of the night. Sturdy closed-toe shoes are a must and a flashlight is optional. Recommended for families with children age 10 and up. Free.
• Sunday, Feb. 10 – Early morning nature walk, 7:45 to 9 a.m. Sturdy closed-toe shoes and water are a must. A hat, sunscreen and insect repellent are recommended. All ages welcome, but children younger than 6 may find the hike challenging. Free.
• Thursday, Feb. 14 – Book Time at Brooker Creek, 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Preserve staff will host this program designed to introduce preschool children to the wonders of the natural world. Showcased this week will be “Forest Bright, Forest Night” by Jennifer Ward. Free.
• Sunday, Feb. 17 – Sunday morning bird walk, 9 to 11 a.m. Sturdy closed-toe shoes and water are a must. A hat, sunscreen and insect repellent are recommended. Recommended for families with children age 10 and up. Free.
• Wednesday, Feb. 20 – Full moon storytelling, 7 to 8:30 p.m. Preserve staff will host this evening of old-fashioned storytelling around the fire. Warm comfortable clothing and insect repellent are recommended. Hot cocoa and coffee will be served.
• Thursday, Feb. 28 – Book Time at Brooker Creek, 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Preserve staff will host this program designed to introduce preschool children to the wonders of the natural world. Showcased this week will be “The Moonflower” by Peter and Jean Loewer. Free.
