Florida Style Gardening CLEARWATER - Harvest award-winning gardening techniques with experts from Pinellas County Extension during a five-session Florida Style Gardening Series scheduled at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, 1955 S. Belcher Road, in Clearwater. Starting Tuesday, Jan. 29, classes take place on five subsequent Tuesday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m. The series’ tuition is $60 to pay for notebooks and materials.
This comprehensive series addresses the challenges of gardening in Pinellas County. It focuses on climate, plant selection, water conservation and pollution, proper fertilizer and pesticide usage and best practices for lawn and landscape maintenance.

Session 1: Jan. 29 - Pinellas County Growing Conditions, Soils and Fertilizers Session 2: Feb. 5 - Florida-Friendly Landscaping, Plant Installation and Plant Establishment Session 3: Feb. 12 - Florida-Friendly Landscape Management and Pruning Session 4: Feb. 19 - Least Toxic Methods of Handling Landscape Pests Session 5: Feb. 26 - Vegetable and Herb Gardening and Composting

African Violet Society meeting TAMPA – The Tampa African Violet Society will meet on Thursday, Feb. 7, 7 p.m., at the Seminole Garden Center, 5800 Central Ave. Mary Lou Harden, Dottie Cesario, Jay Sespico and Lynne Wilson will all take part in a designer’s challenge. Pinellas African Violet show ST. PETERSBURG – The Upper Pinellas African Violet Society Judged Show and Sale will be Saturday, Feb. 9, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; and Sunday, Feb. 10, noon to 4 p.m., at Sunken Gardens, 1825 Fourth St. N. The theme of the sale will be Violets In Our Own Backyard. Admission to the show is free with the price of admission to the gardens. The show will display African violets and the other gesneriads, and the sale area will have blooming and starter plants and supplies. Lecture on Small Flowering Trees CRYSTAL BEACH - Master Gardener Sandy Hugg presents a lecture and slide show of Small Flowering Trees on Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2 and 6:30 p.m. at the Crystal Beach Community Hall, 517 Crystal Beach Ave., Crystal Beach. The February lecture is part of the Palm Harbor Library Garden Series presented by Pinellas County Master Gardeners. Admission is free. Preference will be given to those who reserve seats. Orchid Society meeting LARGO – The Florida West Coast Orchid Society will meet on Thursday, Feb. 14, 7:30 p.m., at the Pinellas County Cooperative Extension, Botanical Gardens, 12175 125th St. N. An educational class will be presented at 7 p.m., with a short meeting at 7:30. Following the meeting, Francesca Morenda will discuss orchids of Brazil. There also will be an orchid sale, raffle and refreshments. Visitors are welcome. Free admission and parking. Call 733-8167.
