Little League spring registration PINELLAS PARK – The Pinellas Park National Little League is open for registration each Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and each Saturday from 9 a.m. during January at Helen Howarth Park, 6301 94th Ave. Registration fees are as follows: Ages 4-6, free; 7-8, $45; 9-12, $65 and 13-16, $75. Dizzy Dean baseball, softball signups SEMINOLE – Seminole Dizzy Dean Baseball and Softball plans registration for the 2008 season through the end of January at the Seminole Junior Warhawks Athletic Association, 11500 125th St. N. Registration is 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays and 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. Games begin Feb. 23. All teams can qualify for postseason play in district, state and World Series tournaments. Gulf Beaches LL signups MADEIRA BEACH – Registration for Gulf Beaches Little League spring season is Saturday, Jan. 26, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Wednesday, Jan. 30, 6 to 8 p.m. Register at Madeira Beach Recreation Center, 200 Rex Place, Madeira Beach. The spring season is open to boys and girls ages 6 to 16. At least one parent or guardian must be present with three proofs of residency, such as a driver’s license, voter identification card, homestead exemption or lease agreement. Proof of residency is not required for children who played spring ball in 2007 unless there was a change of address. The fee is $80 for all ages. Call 392-5524.
Three-on-three streetball tourney MADEIRA BEACH – The city’s recreation department presents the 2008 Beach Out Three-On-Three Streetball Tournament Saturday, Feb. 9, and Sunday, Feb. 10, at the city’s outside courts, 200 Rex Place. Registration deadline is Thursday, Feb. 7. The cost is $40 a team, $50 after the sign-up deadline. There are three age groups, 8-10, 11-12, 13-14. Adult co-ed volleyball signups SEMINOLE – Registration is currently under way for the Seminole Recreation Center’s adult co-ed volleyball league. Registration continues through Feb. 1 for players 16 and older. The season runs from Feb. 7 through March 20. Registration is $150 a team (12-person maximum). Each team must be registered by a Seminole Recreation Center member. Those putting together a team are asked to make sure they sign up enough females so that there are at least two playing on the court at all times. Space is limited to the first four teams. Youth hoops league registration SEMINOLE – The city of Seminole Recreation Division has started registration for its sixth annual youth basketball league. Boys and girls born between 1993 and 1998 are eligible. Youth basketball season will run from February thru May. The registration fee is $80 per child with a recreation card. A non-competitive instructional basketball program for children born in 1999 or 2000 is also available. The fee is $40 per child with a recreation card. Call 391-8345.
League basketball registration ST. PETE BEACH – The Community Center Complex, newly opened in July 2007, boasts a new gym and hardwood indoor basketball courts. Residents of St. Pete Beach and surrounding areas in grades one through nine are welcome. To reserve a spot in the league, register at the St. Pete Beach Community Center gym, 7701 Boca Ciega Drive, or call the Recreation Department at 363-9245.
Youth flag football registration SEMINOLE – Seminole Recreation is accepting registration for the spring season of its youth flag football program. The season will consist of eight games. All youth athletes will receive an NFL-licensed reversible jersey and flags. Games will be Friday nights beginning on March 21. Kids ages 3 to 14 are eligible. Registration is $118 a child. Yoga classes INDIAN ROCKS BEACH – YogaWorks of Pinellas announces its Winter ’08 yoga session, starting in January. Beginning and continuing yoga class prices range from $7 to $10 a class, depending on class frequency and can be purchased by the eight-week session or on a single-class, walk-in basis. The first class is free. Classes are at the Calvary Episcopal Church at 1615 First St. every Tuesday and Thursday at 6:30 p.m. and at 10 a.m. on Wednesday and Friday morning. Keswick hoops league SEMINOLE – Keswick Christian School plans a Saturday youth basketball league for boys and girls in second through sixth grade, through March 1. The league will include instruction by KCS coaches and athletes. Each Saturday session includes instruction and game competition. League T-shirt and end of season awards will be presented. Spring Soccer League registration LARGO – The 2008 Spring Soccer League will hold registrations for the upcoming season. Alstott Foundation Charity Tennis Tournament TREASURE ISLAND – The first Mike Alstott Family Foundation Charity Tennis Tournament is set for Feb. 15 to 17. The Treasure Island Tennis and Yacht Club will host the event, and this year’s sponsors are Mr. and Mrs. Mel Sembler. All proceeds will benefit the Mike Alstott Family Foundation, which is committed to assisting others in uplifting the minds, hearts and spirits of families and children on their way to realizing their full potential. Pow Wow Festival 5K run SEMINOLE – The inaugural Pow Wow Festival 5K and Kids 1-Mile Fun Run is planned Sunday, March 2 at 8 a.m. at the Holland G. Mangum Recreation Center, 9100 113th St. N. The entry fee is $15 before Feb. 28 and $20 afterward. The 5K course is two loops around the Recreation Center, Seminole Community Library and the Seminole campus of St. Petersburg College. Awards will go to the top three finishers in each of the 26 male and female age divisions. Permit needed by boaters PINELLAS COUNTY - An important reminder for boaters: The State of Florida law requires that anyone born after Sept. 30, 1980, must obtain a Boating Safety Education I.D. card (an operating permit), issued before piloting any boat with an engine of 10 horsepower or greater.

USCG Auxiliary teaches boater safety ST. Sailing group GULFPORT – Sea Scout Ship is a coed Venture Scout organization for teens that builds self-confident young leaders who understand the importance of team work on the water and in everyday life. The group meets Wednesdays at 7 p.m., at Boca Ciega Yacht Club and is for parents and teenagers age 14 and up of area families from St. Pete Beach, South Pasadena, Gulfport and St. Petersburg. The teens learn how to fix, and race boats and participate in difficult water-related games. Calisthenics and Conditioning SEMINOLE – The Seminole Recreation Division is offering a new fitness program called Calisthenics & Conditioning by Core Fitness on Thursdays from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Recreation Center. Cost is $7 a class. The one-hour class begins with basic stretching, then moves immediately into various exercises, abdominal exercises, sprinting, sporting drills, plyometrics and other conditioning drills. The class meets in the gymnasium and remains inside for an hour. The program is for all fitness levels. Call 391-8345.
Pickleball lessons SEMINOLE – The Seminole Recreation Division offers pickleball Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Seminole Recreation Center. Pickleball is a sport much like tennis, badminton and racquetball. City recreation officials say it is especially good for seniors because the net is only 3 feet high and players use a hard whiffleball with wooden paddles. Recreation personnel teach participants how to play. Free for participants with a recreation card.
Flex and strength class offered LARGO – The city will offer a chance for patrons to enjoy the relaxing sounds of the water sprays while learning techniques that allow flexibility, strength, relaxation, and stress reduction in an outdoor environment. The classes will meet Wednesday mornings from 10 to 11 at the Highland Family Aquatic Center. Call 518-3019.
Water workout classes PINELLAS COUNTY – Aqua Slim water workout classes are offered Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 9 a.m., at the Long Center, 1502 N. Belcher Road, Clearwater; and Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:15 a.m., at Bonsai Health and Fitness Center, 400 Lake Ave. N.W., Largo. Also offered are fibromyalgia and arthritis classes on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays, 10:30 a.m., and Mondays and Thursdays, 5:30 p.m., at Bonsai Health and Fitness Center. Get moving with Zumba CLEARWATER BEACH – Clearwater Parks and Recreation will offer Zumba fitness classes at the Clearwater Beach Recreation Center Thursdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and Zumba for Seniors on Fridays 10 to 11 a.m. Zumba is a high-energy cardio-dance class designed to be fun and easy on the body. Participants work out to a combination of Latin rhythms including meringue, salsa, calypso, samba and tango. All ages and fitness levels are welcome. Stretch on the beach ST. PETE BEACH – The city of St. Pete Beach Recreation Department’s Stretching on the Beach program meets Tuesdays, 9 to 9:45 a.m., at Upham Beach. The department may add a Thursday class if there is enough interest. The class entails enhancing flexibility, toning the body and stretching to appropriate music. Participants enjoy a beautiful view and wonderful breezes. All ages and genders are welcome. Participants should wear comfortable clothing and bring a mat or towel. Cost is $2 a person. Jazzercise classes BELLEAIR – Jazzercise dance-fitness classes will be on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., and on Thursdays and Saturdays, 8:30 a.m., at Dimmitt Community Center. Fun classes to teach about nature LARGO – Outdoor Explorers, hands-on nature activities, will be offered the second Saturday of each month, 2 to 3:30 p.m., at the George C. McGough Nature Park. Walking Club counts the miles ST. PETE BEACH – The Walking Club meets on Fridays from 8:30 to 11 a.m. at the St. Pete Beach Recreation Center. The group takes scenic walks around the county and has brunches. Meet new friends and walk together for the best of health. All ages and genders are welcome. The number of miles walked will be recorded, and at the end of the walking club season awards will be given to everyone. The cost is $4 a month. Brooker Creek guided hikes TARPON SPRINGS – Brooker Creek Preserve provides free guided hikes on Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in its 8,000+ acres. The hikes enable the general public to discover how the land has changed over time while exploring Pinellas County’s “Wildest Place.” Call 453-6800, as pre-registration is required. Weedon Island Preserve guided hikes ST. PETERSBURG – Weedon Island Preserve offers free guided hikes on Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The volunteer-led guided hikes offer the general public a chance to examine the best of our cultural and environmental attributes. Kayak tour of Clam Bayou Nature Park GULFPORT – Kayak Nature Adventures offers 2-hour guided kayak tours Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 7:15 a.m., from the kayak landing at Clam Bayou Nature Park. The nature park and estuary provides several environments – from the upland natural vegetation, marsh and mangrove forests, to the deeper waters of Boca Ciega Bay. These areas provide habitat and food to a variety of species such as fiddler crabs, clams, wading birds, small animals, dolphins and manatees. Some restoration projects for Clam Bayou have been completed in Gulfport and St. Petersburg and more are planned for the future. Reservations are required.
