ST. PETERSBURG – The city of St. Petersburg hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony Feb. 2 to commemorate the grand opening of the Skyway extension of the Clam Bayou City Trail.
The Skyway Trail is a regional trail facility that is similar to the Pinellas Trail. Sections further to the north were completed in 2012.
It connects to the Pinellas Trail, traversing through Childs Park, and then continues to the south through the new Clam Bayou Nature Preserve, with many sections built on scenic boardwalk-like bridges. The preserve area is already home to many birds, fish and manatees.
From the south end of this project, trail users can connect with the Bayway Trail and bike route to Fort De Soto, or continue to the south to the fishing piers along the Sunshine Skyway Bridge where beautiful views of the shoreline at the tip of Pinellas County await bicyclists, walkers, and runners.
The trail features a stunning view of both Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico with numerous islands dotting the landscape. The trail concludes at the North Skyway Fishing Pier.
