ST. PETERSBURG – Young people ages 6 to12 are invited to a free workshop on Saturday, Feb. 12, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Weedon Island Preserve Cultural and Natural History Center.
Wynne Tatman, re-enacting Turtle Woman, a Tocobaga Indian wise woman, will offer hands-on educational activities to teach young people about the ancient Native Americans of Florida. The workshop will include demonstrations of pottery making, weaving, games, stories, native foods and the technologies for making tools and weapons.
Turtle Woman is a member of Heritage of the Ancient Ones, a multicultural, nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the history, culture and traditions of Florida’s original native people while promoting respect for Mother Earth. By re-creating the world of Florida’s First People, Heritage of the Ancient Ones honors the people who once cared for the land that Floridians now call home.
The Weedon Island Preserve Cultural and Natural History Center is at 1800 Weedon Drive N.E.
