Florida Archaeology Day event
ST. PETERSBURG – A Florida Archaeology Day event will be presented Saturday, March 2, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Weedon Island Preserve, 1800 Weedon Drive NE. Sponsored by the Florida Public Archaeology Network and Alliance for Weedon Island Archaeological Research and Education, the event will include archaeological and educational activities celebrating the historical cultural diversity of Tampa Bay. There will be reenactments of the early Spanish arrival starting at 11 a.m., atlatl throwing and pottery making. Call 453-6500 or visit www.weedonislandpreserve.org.

Weedon Island guided hikes
ST. PETERSBURG – Guided hikes will be offered Saturdays, March 2, 9, 9 to 11 a.m., at Weedon Island Preserve, 1800 Weedon Drive NE. Attendees will learn about the ecosystems on this free guided hike. Participants should bring water and a snack. A hat and closed-toe shoes also are recommended. The hike is best for ages 6 and older. Preregistration is required. Turtle program
ST. PETERSBURG – A free Going Coastal program will be offered Wednesday, March 6, 2 to 4 p.m., at Weedon Island Preserve, 1800 Weedon Drive NE. The program will focus on Florida’s sea turtles. Attendees will learn the life histories of some of Florida’s most beloved marine creatures and what can be done to keep them safe during the nesting season. Advance registration is required. The Great Weedon Bird Quest
ST. PETERSBURG – The Great Weedon Bird Quest will be Friday, March 8, 8 to 10 a.m., at Weedon Island Preserve, 1800 Weedon Drive NE. Guests will learn to identify marks and behaviors of the island birds while taking advantage of this free guided hike. Binoculars will be available. Advance registration is required. Fort De Soto Park guided walks
TIERRA VERDE – A free, guided nature walk will be offered Saturday, March 2, 10 to 11 a.m., at Fort De Soto Park, 3500 Pinellas Bayway S. Guests will enjoy the beauty of Fort De Soto Park with a one-hour nature walk great for the entire family. A guided walk on the mangrove trail is planned. Other guided walks are planned at Fort De Soto Park in March on the following schedule:

• Sunday, March 3, a guided walk on the soldier’s hole trail is planned.

• Saturday, March 9, a guided walk on the beach trail is planned.

• Sunday, March 10, a guided walk on the arrowhead trail is planned.

• Saturday, March 16, a guided walk on the campground trail is planned.

• Saturday, March 23, a guided walk on the soldier’s hole trail is planned.

• Sunday, March 24, a bird tour is planned.

• Saturday, March 30, a guided walk on the beach trail is planned.

All walks start at 10 a.m. and last an hour.

Audubon Society trips, programs
CLEARWATER – The Clearwater Audubon Society will host a number of field trips and programs in March, including the following:

• Monthly bird walk – Saturday, March 2, 8 a.m., at Moccasin Lake Nature Park, 2750 Park Trail Lane, Clearwater. Call John Hood at 461-4762.

• Audubon Explorers – Saturday, March 9, 8:30 a.m. Attendees should meet at the public beach on the Pinellas side of the Courtney Campbell Causeway. For information, call Lynn Sumerson at 596-8822.

• Celery Fields – Saturday, March 16, 7:30 a.m. Attendees should meet at Tri-City Plaza on the NW corner of the intersection of U.S. 19 and East Bay Drive. The destination will be Celery Fields, 6800 Palmer Blvd., Sarasota. Attendees should bring a lunch. For information, call Paul Trunk at 447-4785.

• Audubon Explorers – Saturday, March 23, 8:30 a.m., at Eagle Lake Park, 1800 Keene Road, Largo. Call Lynn Sumerson at 596-8822.

• Flatwoods Park – Saturday, March 30, 7:30 a.m. Attendees should meet at Walgreens on the corner of U.S. 19 and Curlew Road. The destination will be Flatwoods Park, 14302 Morris Bridge Road, Thonotosassa. For information, call Lynn Sumerson at 596-8822.

The society’s field trips and programs are open to anyone who is interested in learning about Florida’s environment. Call or email the appropriate contact/field trip leader for information and directions.

McGough Nature Park night hikes
LARGO – Night hikes will be presented Saturdays, March 16 and April 20, 6:30 p.m., at George C. McGough Nature Park, 11901 146th N. St. This will be a free interpretative nature hike through McGough’s habitats. Call 518-3047.

Spring Ecofest
LARGO – Earth Day will be celebrated early at the Spring Ecofest, set for Saturday, April 20, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at George C. McGough Nature Park, 11901 146th N. St. The event will feature activities for kids, music, live wildlife exhibits, information on recycling, guest speakers and a free giveaway in honor of Arbor Day. Food, drinks and snacks will be available for purchase, with proceeds benefitting the park. For information, call 518-3047.

Wee-Time at Weedon
ST. PETERSBURG – Wee-Time at Weedon will be presented Thursday, March 14, 10:30 to 11:15 a.m., at Weedon Island Preserve, 1800 Weedon Drive NE. This free program is designed to introduce children ages 3 to 5 to the wonders of the natural and cultural world. Every second and fourth Thursday of each month, children are treated to a variety of stories and hands-on activities that connect them to their environment. Preregistration is required. To register, call 582-2100 or visit www.weedonislandpreserve.org.
