Come play at Largo park LARGO – Playing! Unplugged 2014 for children and families will be Saturday, April 26, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m, at Largo Central Park, 101 Central Park Drive. The free event will include more than eight play spaces to explore, build, and create including archery, Active Play and a toddler/infant zone. Limited parking will be available on site. Coaches lead football clinic at Highland LARGO – The city of Largo will host a free, fun-filled football clinic for ages 8 to 17 with instruction by local area football coaches Saturday, April 26, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Highland Recreation Complex, 400 Highland Ave. Registration opens at 9:30 a.m. A parent or legal guardian must sign the participation waiver prior to the event. Men’s basketball tournament on April 5 LARGO – Register your team for Hoop Fest, Largo’s men’s 3-on-3 basketball tournament April 5, 9 a.m., at the new outdoor basketball courts at Highland Recreation Complex, 400 Highland Ave. The cost is $80 per team and $10 per person for the extra 3-Point Shootout and Dunk Contest. Space is limited. Teams must register and pay by March 28.
Three children sports programs offered LARGO – The city of Largo offers three programs to help promote children’s nutrition, wellness and activity at Highland Recreation Complex, 400 Highland Ave.
The programs are jam-packed with physical activity, education about healthy habits and participation that reinforce and apply the fundamentals of team sports.
Go Girl Sports, for ages 6 to 10, takes place on Wednesdays, 5:45 p.m. and introduces girls to sports – including basketball, volleyball, tennis, soccer and more – in a social setting through skill instruction and other activities.
Basketball Basics, for ages 6 to 8, is on Saturdays, 8:45 to 9:30 a.m., and applies the fundamentals of basketball: dribbling, passing, shooting, defense and team play. Drills, skills, and informal mini-scrimmages are played with instruction as needed.
Youth Track and Field, for ages 5 to 18, is a program where kids will team up to run against friends and rivals from other local cities. This program is on Wednesdays, 6 p.m., and includes three practices at Largo High School and one track meet per month at an off-site location. All participants will get an official team shirt and ribbons for their events.

Become a lifeguard LARGO – The city’s of Largo’s American Red Cross Lifeguarding Class will be held Monday through Friday, March 24-28, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Southwest Pool, 13120 Vonn Road. The cost is $195 for residents and $225 for nonresidents. The American Red Cross books and materials costs are included.
This class is open to anyone 15 years of age and older who wish to begin a career in lifeguarding. Participants will be tested on the first day of class on their ability to complete the following: a 300 yard continuous swim, retrieval and a 10 pound brick swim from a depth of 7 to 10 feet of water.
This course teaches the skills necessary to become an American Red Cross certified lifeguard, which is widely accepted throughout the aquatic profession. Students who successfully complete the 40-hour course will receive certification in lifeguarding, CPR/AED for the professional rescuer and First Aid. All individuals must have a city Recreation Card to participate in either class. These classes fill up fast so enroll today.
Archery lessons taught at Southwest LARGO – Learn the basics of archery in a fun and safe indoor environment in a weekly class on Tuesdays, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., at the Southwest Recreation Complex, 13120 Vonn Road. Registration has opened for the archery lessons, which will teach the proper techniques of shooting a bow and arrow, compete during fun activities. The classes are split, with students ages 8 to 12 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and students ages 13 to adult from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The cost is $35 with resident recreation card or $43.50 with nonresident card.
