Harry Guetzlaff Night SEMINOLE – The Seminole High School baseball program plans a Harry Guetzlaff Night at the ballpark Tuesday, March 24, 7 p.m. when the Warhawks play host to Dixie Hollins. Guetzlaff, who died in December at age 93, will be honored before the game. Guetzlaff was a big supporter of Seminole Little League and the Seminole High School baseball program.
Guided canoe trip ST. PETERSBURG - A guilded canoe trip is Friday, March 20, noon to 3 p.m., at Weedon Island Preserve, 1800 Weedon Drive N.E., St. Petersburg. Explore the south canoe trail of Weedon Island Preserve and get a rare look at the aquatic ecosystems that make west-central Florida special. Trained guides lead through mangrove stands and over seagrass and oyster beds while pointing out various flora and fauna. The cost, including tax, for this unique experience is $15 per person or $30 per canoe with a maximum of three people in each canoe. Children should be over 6 years old and accompanied by an adult. The Ecology of Mangrove Swamps ST. PETERSBURG - The Ecology of Mangrove Swamps is Saturday, March 21, 10 a.m. to noon, on Weedon Island Preserve, 1800 Weedon Drive N.E., St. Petersburg. Mangrove swamps are an essential coastal wetland ecosystem along both coasts of peninsular Florida. There are many secrets waiting to be discovered in the mangrove swamp. This program addresses and explores these highly adaptive trees and the different biological communities they support. This program is free and best for ages 12 and older. Guided hike TARPON SPRINGS - Guided Hike on Saturday, March 21, 9 to 11 a.m., at Brooker Creek Preserve, 3940 Keystone Road, Tarpon Springs. Take a walk through time on a guided hike along the Brooker Creek Preserve Education Trail. Join in this walk, see how the land has changed over time and discuss the ecological footprints left by those changes. All ages welcome, but children younger than 6 may find the hike challenging. Guided hike PALM HARBOR - Guided hike on Saturday, March 21, 9 to 10:30 a.m., at Chesnut Park, 2200 East Lake Road, Palm Harbor. Explore the outdoors and discover plants naturally found in wetlands and pine flatwoods. Learn how these plants have been used over the years. Basketball league registration LARGO – The city of Largo is now registering participants for its “In The Zone” Basketball League. This league will take place at the Highland Recreation Complex beginning April 11. Games will be on Saturday mornings. Step aerobics SEMINOLE – Step aerobics is back at the Seminole Recreation Center under the direction of instructor Amanda Collins. All ages and fitness levels welcome. St. Patrick’s Day golf, tennis TREASURE ISLAND – The Treasure Island Recreation Department will be hosting its seventh annual St. Patrick’s Day Golf and Tennis Social on Saturday, March 21, 9 a.m., at the Treasure Bay Golf and Tennis facility, 10315 Paradise Blvd., Treasure Island. The cost is $30 a couple/team or $20 a person, which includes the tennis mixer or golf scramble and barbecue. A portion of the proceeds will benefit “Team TI” in the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life April 17-18. Gymnastics and cheerleading open house CLEARWATER – A Bayside Gymnastics and Cheerleading Open House is set for Saturday, March 28, 1 to 4 p.m., at 4400 118th Ave. Suite 103, Clearwater. The Bayside Booster Club is hosting the event. There will be free food, face painting, bounce houses, balloon art, demonstrations, a fire engine and other activities.
PAL spring break camps SEMINOLE – The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Police Athletic League has two spring break sports camps set for March 30 to April 3. Guppy’s Gulfside Gallop INDIAN ROCKS BEACH – The Guppy’s Gulfside Gallop 5K Run and 1-mile Fun Walk will be Saturday, April 4, 8 a.m., at Indian Rocks Beach County Park, 1700 Gulf Blvd. The race will be on the beach, with the start and finish at the county park. Early registration through Sunday, March 29 is $15 and includes a race T-shirt. Registration after that date is $20 which includes a race T-shirt as long as they are available. Safe boating class CLEARWATER – A Safe Boating class will be offered beginning Monday, April 6 and continuing Wednesdays, April 8 and 15; Mondays, April 13 and 20. Classes are from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Clearwater Sail and Power Squadron Headquarters Building, 1000 Cleveland St., Clearwater. Successful completion of this course entitles students to obtain a free, lifetime Boating Safety Education I.D. Card from the state of Florida. Cost for the course is $40 for course book and materials. A $5 discount is available if one brings a friend, and there is a 50 percent price reduction for a second family member using the same book. Bird watching trip CLEARWATER - The Clearwater Audubon Society will host a birdwatching trip to Fort De Soto County Park Saturday, April 11, meeting at 7:30 a.m. in front of Party City at the Tri-City Plaza. Jazzercise SEMINOLE – Join Seminole Recreation members with Jazzercise starts in April at the Seminole Recreation Center. Jazzercise is a 60-minute workout that fuses dance and muscle toning movements, choreographed to music. The cost is $32 a month and includes three classes a week. Rotary’s Kingfish Tournament CLEARWATER BEACH – The Rotary Club of Clearwater’s annual Kingfish Tournament is set for Saturday, April 18, 7 a.m. with a 4 p.m. weigh-in at the Clearwater Yacht Club, 830 Bayway Blvd. The mandatory captain’s meeting is Friday, April 17, 7 p.m., at Coachman Park, 150 Drew St., Clearwater. The tournament offers $8,000 in cash prizes to the top anglers. The event is the club’s primary fundraising activity each year. Harvey’s 5K run ST. PETERSBURG – Registration has begun for the annual Festival of States Harvey’s 5K and 1-mile Fun Run Saturday, April 18, 8 a.m. The race will start at Bayshore Drive and Fifth Avenue Northeast. The course will take runners down Bayshore Drive along St. Petersburg’s waterfront toward Albert Whitted Airport and turn back toward the finish at Fifth Avenue Northeast. The entry fees for the 5K is $15 in advance and $20 on race day. The 1-mile Fun Run is $10 in advance and $15 on race day. A souvenir T-shirt will be given to all who register in advance and to race day registrants as available. Registration is available online at www.festivalofstates.com or in person at Feet First Running Store, 4949 Fourth St. N. until April 12. MarineQuest open house ST. PETERSBURG - The 15th annual MarineQuest open house is Saturday, April 25, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Fish and Wildlife Research Institute, 100 Eighth Avenue S.E., St. Petersburg. Visitors of all ages can experience science first hand. Check out live animals in the touch tank, interact with some of Florida's top scientists, create fish prints at the "Gyotaku" station, and more. Parking and admission are free. 3-on-3 hoops tournament ST. PETE BEACH – The St. Pete Beach Community Center plans a 3-on-3 basketball tournament Sunday, April 26, beginning at noon. The single-elimination tournament will offer cash prizes for the winning team. Registration fees are $30 a team, all players must be 18 years or older, and registration is limited to the first 12 teams. Tournament sponsors Red Bull and Sweetbay Supermarkets will be providing free Red Bull Energy Drinks and Gatorade to all players. Morton Plant Mease Triathlon CLEARWATER – Online registration is now open for the fourth annual Morton Plant Mease Triathlon, set for Sunday, July 12. The course will begin with a 1/3-mile open water swim in the Gulf of Mexico at Sand Key Park. From there, the 13-mile bike route will cross Sand Key Causeway, through Clearwater Beach and over the Memorial Causeway, then wind through downtown Clearwater and Belleair and the Belleair Beach Causeway. Runners will complete the race with a 3.1-mile run through Sand Key Park. Registrants may sign up online at www.mpmtriathlon.org and www.active.com. The registration fee is $70 for each competitor and $85 for a relay team. Fees will increase an additional $5 after July 5. Entry fees are nonrefundable. Online registration closes on July 8 and no registration will be offered on the day of the race. Registration capacity is limited to 1,000 entries.
