Classes teach safe boating practices

Safe boating classes offered in Madeira Beach
MADEIRA BEACH – The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 11-3 plans monthly safe boating classes through the end of the year at its headquarters at 299 Boca Ciega Drive. Classes meet the first Saturday of the month from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The cost is $40 per person. The next class meets April 6. Other classes will follow on May 4 and June 8.

The classes are open to the public and recommended for anyone who owns a boat, a personal watercraft, anyone interested in purchasing a boat or anyone who wants to learn safe boating practices.

Classes cover subjects such as navigating the waterways, operating a boat safely, legal regulations, what to do in an emergency, getting to know your boat and information you need to know before getting under way. Anyone born after January 1989 must take a boating safety course and have a valid boating certificate and a photo ID while operating a vessel.

Marine radio class planned in St. Petersburg
ST. PETERSBURG – The St. Petersburg Sail and Power Squadron plans a two-hour safe boating seminar on how to use a marine radio Wednesday, March 27, 7 to 9 p.m., at the St. Petersburg Sailing Center, 250 Second Ave. SE. Power Squadron offers course
ST. PETERSBURG – The St Petersburg Sail and Power Squadron is offering its seven-week safe boating program, America’s Boating Course, to the public beginning Monday, April 1. Classes meet on Mondays from 7 to 9 p.m.

The program is available to anyone age 12 or older. It covers required safety equipment, boat handling, rules of the road, navigation aids, anchoring, adverse conditions, communications, trailering, PWC operation, knots and lines, and introduction to charts.

Graduates qualify for a Florida Boating Safety Education ID Card and may qualify for insurance discounts.  The cost is $35 per family. Register online at www.b­oatin­g-stp­ete.o­rg.

Boating classes offered in St. Petersburg
ST. PETERSBURG – Boating skills and seamanship classes are presented by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Flotilla 72 each Tuesday night, 7:30 to 9:30, at 1300 Beach Drive SE, St. Petersburg. Call 898-1324 for information. Completion of this course satisfies the state of Florida boater safety education requirements.
