Brooker Creek sets May schedule

TARPON SPRINGS – The Brooker Creek Preserve Environmental Education Center will host a series of programs in May.

Scheduled programs are as follows:

• Saturday, May 5 – Rain Barrel Workshop, 10 to 11 a.m. Learn to set up a rain barrel along with valuable water conservation techniques. Free. Participants can arrange to receive a rain barrel and spigot for $20.

• Sunday, May 6 – Reflections of Florida Through a Chinese Brush, 1 to 4 p.m. Meet members of the Fu Sang Artists’ Guild. Free.

• Wednesdays, May 9 and 16 – Wednesday Evening Walk, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. An evening stroll recommended for families with children ages 10 and up. Free. Sturdy closed-toe shoes are a must while water and insect repellent are optional.

• Thursday, May 10 – Book Time at Brooker Creek, “Look Out for Turtles,” 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Designed to introduce preschool children, ages 3 to 5, to wonders of the natural world. Free.

• Saturday, May 12 – International Migratory Bird Day Walk, 9 to 11 a.m. Staff will lead guests on a morning walk to experience the sights and sounds of the preserve’s birds. Closed-toed shoes are a must, and water and a hat are recommended. Free.

• Sunday, May 13 – Photography Hike, 9 to 11 a.m. Free.

• Wednesday, May 16 and Saturday, May 19 – Spring Butterfly Identification Seminar and Count. On Wednesday, 7 to 9 p.m., participants will learn to identify butterflies; on Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., volunteers will meet to put their skills to use. Free.

• Thursday, May 17 – The Great Naturalist Reading Series, 10 a.m. to noon. As a kickoff to this new series, the program will provide an overview of noted naturalists including Alexander von Humboldt, Charles Darwin, Rachel Carson, Jane Goodall and Loren Eiseley. Participants will choose the naturalist for study for the following month, along with a book title for outside reading.

• Saturday, May 19 – Edible Insects, 1 to 2 p.m. Cost is $3 a person. Recommended for families with children 5 and older.

• Wednesday, May 23 – Brooker Basics: Upland Ecology Presentation, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The workshop will focus on upland ecosystems found in the preserve including flatwoods, xeric oak hammocks and sandhills. A field session will follow on Saturday, May 26. Free. Recommended for adults and suitable for children 12 and older.

• Thursday, May 24 – Boot Time at Brooker Creek, “Fireflies,” 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Free. Recommended for children ages 3 to 5.
