SPC begins state tournament play

CLEARWATER – State tournaments begin Friday for the St. Petersburg College baseball and softball teams.

The baseball team, coached by Seminole resident Dave Pano, is making its 10th consecutive trip to the state tournament.

The team, which was 35-15 overall and 17-8 in the Suncoast Conference, plays Friday at 4 p.m. against the Mid-Florida Conference runnerup, Central Florida Community College.

The double-elimination tournament concludes Tuesday. It is being played at Chain O’ Lakes Stadium in Winter Haven. St. Petersburg College was the state champion in 2005.

The softball team also is in Winter Haven. The first game for Coach Lance Lamport’s team is Friday at noon against Tallahassee Community College. The second game in the double-elimination tournament is at 5 p.m. Friday.

The women finished second in the Suncoast Conference with a 17-5 record. The team was 43-16 overall.

The tournament has the top two ranked teams in the nation in Chipola Community College and Manatee Community College.
