DUNEDIN – The 35th annual July 4th Kiwanis-Virginia Street Dermatology Midnight Run is Friday, July 4th. The featured event is the 10K race with a 5K and a 1-mile run/walk preceding it.
The novelty of the late-night runs is considered a major drawing card for the annual event.
The races annually draw 2,300 to 2,600 runners, depending on the weather, said Chuck Winscott, the assistant director of the event.
“I used to run all the time,” Winscott said. “I don’t ever remember a run that I signed up for that went off in the evening or late at night like this.”
All runs start and finish at Causeway Plaza at the corner of Bayshore Boulevard and Curlew Road in Dunedin. The 1-mile race starts at 11 p.m. and the 5K at 11:25 p.m., both on July 3.
The 10K race starts at 12:15 a.m. on July 4. The 10K and 5K races are both certified and chip timed.
Runners come from all over the state and elsewhere for the events.
“We have been doing it now for so long it’s almost on auto pilot,” Winscott said. “We get great cooperation from the city of Dunedin. The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office helps out,” he said. “We work well together. We’ve done it for so long we know everything we need to do.”
Preregistration is available online at www.Active.com through Sunday, June 29, and in person on race night.
