Explore the secrets to growing a beautiful garden at a Florida-Friendly Landscaping Series sponsored by Pinellas County Extension. The five-session series begins Wednesday, July 8, and continues through Wednesday, Aug. 12.
Pinellas County Extension is offering a five-session Florida-Friendly Landscaping Series beginning Wednesday, July 8, and continuing on the Wednesdays of July 15, July 22, Aug. 5 and Aug. 12. Each class begins at 6 p.m. and finishes at 8:30 p.m. at Boyd Hill Nature Preserve at 1101 Country Club Way S., in St. Petersburg.

Tuition is $10 a class. Citizens can sign up for one or more of the classes. To register for classes, call Boyd Hill Nature Preserve at 727-893-7326.

Here’s a snapshot of the information offered during each class.

- Wednesday, July 8: A Principles of Florida-Friendly Landscape Design and Maintenance class is scheduled. Learn the nine principles and see them in action with examples of Pinellas County yards. Explore ways to welcome wildlife into the garden, especially butterflies.

- Wednesday, July 15:  How to best use water will be discussed at this Water-Wise class. Learn the basics of traditional irrigation sprinkler systems and if alternatives like micro-irrigation might benefit landscapes. Rain barrels will be available for purchase.

- Wednesday, July 22: A Concepts of Landscape Design class will be offered. Experienced landscape designers show how to design a landscape that is friendly to Florida’s environment as well as aesthetically pleasing.

- Wednesday, Aug. 5: A Landscape Design Clinic is a follow-up to the Concepts of Landscape Design class but others who have already created a landscape design or want to learn more are welcome to attend too.

- Wednesday, Aug. 12: This Landscape Maintenance class offers a lot of information about pruning, using fertilizers and pesticides, mulch and the impact of drought.

Pinellas County Extension is a partnership between Pinellas County government and the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences as part of a nationwide network of land grant universities.
