ISLAND ESTATES – Winter the dolphin has a brand new prosthetic tail. The biggest change from the previous tail is that this one includes a dynamic tail joint.
The joint is made out of 100 percent stainless steel and includes energy returning cables. It will absorb the pressure she would exert in moving it up and down and translate that into forward motion.
The new tail is also fabricated with nonslip material. This tail will ultimately allow Winter to begin to swim on her own.
Winter was rescued from an abandoned crab trap line in December 2005 and lost her tail as a result of the accident. She has been at Clearwater Marine Aquarium ever since and has undergone substantial rehabilitation since her arrival.
