Fish Tales Full moon should give angler’s more options

As we approach this week’s full moon we can only hope that the increasingly stronger tides are being kinder to anglers than the slow moving tides of last week.
Mother Nature is also getting more involved with your fishing plans; west winds all week will have those early morning storms pushing on-shore.
So plan your trip according to the tide and pay close attention to the radar and this should be a pretty good week for fishing.
Snook will stage heavily in the passes on this moon. Fish the outgoing tide and you should get multiple bursts of action.
Angler’s fishing the shoals around the passes should down-size their tackle to 10-pound braid and a 30-pound leader. Try free-lining pilchards for best results, but they haven’t been so easy to get lately, so use what you can get – pinfish, grunts or threadfins will all work.
Trout fishing remains good around the Clearwater-Dunedin area. Target the 4- to 6-foot grass flats near the main channel. Small soft-plastic jigs rigged on an 8-ounce head will work. Also, if you have kids on-board try a DOA shrimp fished under an Old Bayside rattle float.
Tarpon will stage up at Egmont as they wait for those crabs to be flushed out of the bay. Pick those big afternoon outgoing tides this weekend and you stand a pretty good chance at hooking up.
The offshore nighttime snapper bite should be awesome this weekend, whether you are planning a middle grounds trip or the pipeline, plenty of snapper can be found in the 130- to 150-foot depths. In closer the Skyway fishing piers have been good all summer for snapper and this weekend and the first part of next week will be excellent. Most Skyway vets prefer to fish a few days after the full moon, once the tides have slowed down a bit.
