PINELLAS COUNTY – The Suncoast Seniors softball team, based in Clearwater, placed fifth out of 11 teams at the Summer National Senior Games held in Louisville, Ky., June 22 to July 7. Two of the elimination games were decided by a total of three runs, with one game going into extra innings.
The team also made a rare triple play, which occurred in the sixth inning against the Kentucky Fillies, the team that eventually went on to win the gold medal.
Top batting honors went to Aileen Laing, who hit .846 and Mel Miller at .769.
The Suncoast Seniors won five of seven major tournaments entered last year, from the ISSA World Cup in Manassas, Va., to the Huntsman World Senior Championship in St. George, Utah.
The local players keep their skills honed by playing year-round league softball on various teams at the Eddie C. Moore complex in Clearwater. They also have players from Tallahassee, the Naples area, The Villages and a few from out of state.
