Winter ball signups set
PINELLAS PARK – Winter ball signups for the Pinellas Park National Little League are set for Aug. 7 through 11 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and Aug. 13 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Helen Howard Complex, 6301 94th Ave. Call 580-8914.

Pinellas Park youth soccer registration set
PINELLAS PARK – Pinellas Park Youth Soccer will have registration Fridays, Aug. 11 and 18, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and Saturdays, Aug. 5, 12 and 19, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Registration is open to boys and girls ages 4 to 18. It will take place at the city auditorium, next to the police station on 59th Street. New players should bring a child’s birth certificate and picture. Call 481-1835.

Softball registration scheduled
PINELLAS PARK – Pinellas Fastpitch Softball will have registration for fall ball beginning Aug. 15. Fall ball is a noncompetitive, instructional season of softball through Pinellas Fastpitch, where players are taught the proper skills and rules to enjoy the game. It is open to girls from the ages 5 to 16.

Registration is set for Tuesdays, Aug. 15, 22, 29 and Sept. 5, 6 to 7:30 p.m.; Thursdays, Aug. 17, 24, 31 and Sept. 7, 6 to 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays, Aug. 19, 26, Sept. 2 and 9, 10 a.m. to noon. Call 527-3677.

Morton Plant Mease, Clearwater Threshers to host benefit
CLEARWATER – Baseball fans can support the Clearwater Threshers baseball team and help fund breast cancer research by attending Breast Cancer Awareness Night, Pitch for Pink, on Friday, Aug. 18, 7:05 p.m., during the Threshers baseball game at Bright House Networks Field. The Threshers, Class A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies, will play the Sarasota Reds. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Morton Plant Mease Susan Cheek Needler Breast Center and the Morton Plant Mease Foundation which benefits the four community-owned hospitals and medical programs of Morton Plant Mease Health Care. Workshop to focus on ducks, wetlands
LARGO – Pinellas County Extension will be the site for a workshop Saturday, Aug. 19, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., on Dabbling Ducks to Wetland Mucks – An Introductory Naturalist’s Workshop for adults. The workshop will be sponsored by the Institute of Agricultural Sciences at the University of Florida Pinellas County Extension and St. Petersburg Audubon. Florida’s climate, ecosystems, plant and wildlife species will be discussed in the annual workshop. Learn about natural areas, wildlife identification and behaviors, detrimental invasive exotics and how each of us can help natural Florida thrive. The cost is $40 for Audubon members; $50 for nonmembers. Audubon membership is included in fee. To register, call 582-2673.

Golf tournament honors memory of ‘Chicago Bob’
SEMINOLE – In memory of “Chicago Bob” Allen, his many friends will host a golf tournament at the Seminole Lake Country Club with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 24. Tournament format will be four-person scramble. The tournament will raise money for Allen’s family, as well as Hospice. The $75 entry fee includes 18 holes of golf, a golf cart, lunch and awards and prizes. The course is at 6100 Augusta Blvd. N. Sailing club starts new season
DUNEDIN – The Windlass club will have a Membership Coffee Thursday, Aug. 24, 9:30 a.m., at First Presbyterian Church. The club meets every Thursday during the school year for racing, monthly cruises and interclub races with the other women’s sailing clubs on the West Coast of Florida. New members are accepted only in August and September. Women sailors must be able to swim and know basic sailing techniques (information on local sailing classes will be available). Instruction on pram rigging, racing rules, and other sailing know-how will be provided in a special “New Salts Orientation,” plus weekly educational sessions during the fall. All new members begin in the pram fleet, so boat ownership is not necessary. Dues are $45 a year for membership, with a one-time initiation fee of $40. Golf tournament to feature drawing for car
BELLEAIR – Charity Works will host a golf tournament on Saturday, Sept. 9, with a 1 p.m. scramble start, at Belleair Country Club. Segway of Tampa Bay in Clearwater is sponsoring an opportunity to win a 1992 Euro-styled XTC Ferrari-Replicar. Tickets are 10 for $125, five for $75, three for $50 or one for $20. Chamber gives heads up for golf tournament
LARGO – The Largo/Mid-Pinellas Chamber of Commerce will have its third annual Chamber Cup Golf Tournament on Friday, Sept. 29, at the Belleview Biltmore Golf Club. Registration begins at 11 a.m. with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. A special early bird registration cost is $115 a golfer before Tuesday, Aug. 1. After Aug. 1, registration cost is $125 a golfer. Sponsorship opportunities are available.

World Rivers Day Fest set for Sept. 30
TARPON SPRINGS - Brooker Creek Preserve will celebrate the second International World Rivers Day Fest on Saturday, Sept. 30, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Discover the area waterways and learn practical ideas about keeping waterways clean. The day also will incude the grand opening of the preserve's new trail system. The preserve has more than four miles of natural trails, with boardwalks connecting to the Brooker Creek Preserve Environmental Education Center. Brooker Creek Preserve is at 3940 Keystone Road. Warhawks Golf Classic set for Oct. 7
SEMINOLE – Sponsors are now being accepted for the First Annual Warhawk Golf Classic, set for Oct. 7 at Pasadena Golf and Country Club. Registration is 11:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Sponsored by the Warhawks Baseball Booster Club, the tournament raises money to support the baseball program at Seminole High School. Golf tourney to benefit sailing association
OLDSMAR – The Clearwater Community Sailing Association and the Clearwater Beach Association will host their first annual golf tournament on Monday, Oct. 30, at Eastlake Woodlands Country Club – North Course. The event will feature a golf scramble, goodie bags, prizes, box lunch, dinner and cash bar, silent auction and raffle. An awards dinner featuring comedian G. David Howard will complete the day. Cost is $125 a player. Participants can play again for the price of the cart fee. Hole sponsorships are $100. The event will help the Clearwater Community Sailing Center provide equipment and scholarships so children, seniors and the physically challenged can participate in the sport of sailing. Leave turtle nests alone
GULF BEACHES – Residents and visitors are reminded that it is a federal offense to tamper with a sea turtle nest. Violators face stiff fines and possible imprisonment. To report a violation, call 1-800-DIAL-FMP.

Swimmers advised to do the stingray shuffle
PINELLAS COUNTY – Swimmers are reminded to do the “stingray shuffle” when entering the water. Shuffling one’s feet creates a disturbance that causes stingrays to move away. If a sting does occur, see a beach guard if available for a hot pack treatment, or soak in hot soapy water and seek immediate medical attention.

Permit needed by boaters
PINELLAS COUNTY - An important reminder for boaters: The State of Florida law requires that anyone born after Sept. 30, 1980, must obtain a Boating Safety Education I.D. card (an operating permit), issued before piloting any boat with an engine of 10 horsepower or greater.

Boating classes to get under way
MADEIRA BEACH – Boating Safety classes are offered by Flotilla 73 of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. The Safe Boating 2006 schedule includes: Saturday, Sept. 9, 8 a.m. – one lesson; Tuesdays, Oct. 10 through Nov. 21, 7:30 p.m. – 13 lessons; Friday, Dec. 1, 8 a.m. – one lesson. USCG Auxiliary teaches boater safety
ST. PETERSBURG – Several Boating Skills and Seamanship Programs will be offered by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary on Tuesdays, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. The program satisfies the state boater safety education requirements. The course is taught at 1300 Beach Drive S.E. Call 823-3753.

Stretch on the beach
ST. PETE BEACH – The city of St. Pete Beach Recreation Department’s Stretching on the Beach program meets Tuesdays, 9 to 9:45 a.m., at Upham Beach.

The department may add a Thursday class if there is enough interest. The class entails enhancing flexibility, toning the body and stretching to appropriate music. Participants enjoy a beautiful view and wonderful breezes. All ages and genders are welcome. Participants should wear comfortable clothing and bring a mat or towel. Cost is $2 a person. Jazzercise classes offered
BELLEAIR – Jazzercise dance-fitness classes will be on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., and on Thursdays and Saturdays, 8:30 a.m., at Dimmitt Community Center. North Beaches YMCA to offer armchair exercises
INDIAN SHORES – The North Beaches YMCA will offer armchair exercise classes at Indian Shores Town Hall. The seated exercise class will be a combination of breathing, stretching, light weight training and aerobic work. The focus will be on improving strength, flexibility, range of motion and cardiovascular fitness. Music from the 1940s and 1950s will help to keep the class fun. YMCA offers pilates, yoga
INDIAN ROCKS BEACH – The North Beaches YMCA is offering pilates and yoga to help those who’ve set goals to get in shape. Classes are in the mornings and evenings at Calvary Episcopal Church and Church of the Isles in Indian Rocks Beach, and at Indian Shores Town Hall. In addition to exercise punch cards, the YMCA offers memberships that allow participation in all of local classes, as well as access to both Bardmoor and Clearwater fitness facilities. Mom and Tot Yoga with Marzana Bard is offered on Friday mornings. Fun classes to teach about nature
LARGO – Outdoor Explorers, hands-on nature activities, will be offered the second Saturday of each month, 2 to 3:30 p.m., at the George C. McGough Nature Park. The program, sponsored by Largo Recreation Parks & Arts Department, is designed for children in grades first to fifth. The cost is $3 with a resident recreation card; $3.75 with a nonresident card and $6.75 without a card. The park is at 11901 146th St. N. Call 518-3047.

Walking Club counts the miles
ST. PETE BEACH – The Walking Club meets on Fridays from 8:30 to 11 a.m. at the St. Pete Beach Recreation Center. The group takes scenic walks around the county and has brunches. Meet new friends and walk together for the best of health. All ages and genders are welcome. The number of miles walked will be recorded, and at the end of the walking club season awards will be given to everyone. The cost is $4 a month. Weedon Island Preserve plans guided hikes
ST. PETERSBURG – Weedon Island Preserve offers free guided hikes on Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The volunteer-led guided hikes offer the general public a chance to examine the best of our cultural and environmental attributes. Call 453-6500, as pre-registration is required. The Center is located at 1800 Weedon Drive N.E.

Kayak tour highlights Clam Bayou Nature Park
GULFPORT – Kayak Nature Adventures offers 2-hour guided kayak tours Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 7:15 a.m., from the kayak landing at Clam Bayou Nature Park. The nature park and estuary provides several environments – from the upland natural vegetation, marsh and mangrove forests, to the deeper waters of Boca Ciega Bay. These areas provide habitat and food to a variety of species such as fiddler crabs, clams, wading birds, small animals, dolphins and manatees. Some restoration projects for Clam Bayou have been completed in Gulfport and St. Petersburg and more are planned for the future. Reservations are required.
