Volunteers will search for the elusive bay scallop during Great Bay Scallop Search on Saturday, Aug. 26.
TAMPA BAY – Tampa Bay Watch will host its annual Great Bay Scallop Search on Saturday, Aug. 26, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. More than 150 volunteer boaters and snorkelers will search Boca Ciega and lower Tampa Bay for the elusive bay scallop, which hides in seagrass beds.

Tampa Bay Watch will partner with the Tampa Bay Estuary Program, Pinellas County Environmental Fund and Crabby Bill’s Seafood Restaurants for this year’s event. Participants will help gather information about these interesting marine animals and contribute to the long-term survival of the scallop population. Volunteer boaters are still needed, and must preregister for this event. All will meet at the Ft. De Soto boat ramp by 9 a.m. for project orientation and assignments. All volunteers will receive an event T-shirt and boxed lunch from Crabby Bill’s.

Call volunteer coordinator Alexis Ackman at 867-8166 or e-mail aackman@tampabaywatch.org.
