Labor Day poolside picnic

LARGO – Bring the family and a blanket and enjoy your own picnic basket by the pool, during an extended three-hour session at Highland Family Aquatic Center Monday, Sept. 1, noon to 3 p.m. Enjoy a special family and friends discount admission. Do not bring alcohol or glass into the facility. Splash’s Snack Bar will be open.

Learn soccer at Highland

LARGO – Register for Largo’s Instructional Soccer Program, where children will learn the skills of soccer through instruction and games, at Highland Recreation Complex. This program includes 45 minutes of instruction followed by 30 minutes of game time. Games begin Saturday, Sept. 6. Cost is $45.

Register for Mother Son Messy Madness

LARGO – Registration has opened for the city of Largo’s third annual Mother Son Messy Madness Saturday, Sept. 20, 6 to 8 p.m., at the Highland Recreation Complex. The special night is just for moms and sons ages 5 to 13. This year’s theme is “Down on the Farm.” Dinner, dessert and messy, high-energy games, for moms and sons, are all included. Bring towels, as Largo Fire Rescue will be on site with a fire truck to help spray participants clean after the activities.

The cost is $25 per couple and $8 for each additional son. Spaces are limited. Register at Highland Recreation Complex; the deadline is Friday, Sept. 12.

Sign up for free VPK with Largo

LARGO – The city of Largo is offering free voluntary prekindergarten, or VPK, at Southwest Recreation Complex. The high quality, licensed program geared toward the joy of learning for ages 4 to 6 is offered Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to noon. Before care, from 8 a.m., and the wrap-around program, until 4 p.m., also will be offered. Participants must have completed certificate of eligibility from the Early Learning Coalition and complete registration packet that is available at the Southwest Complex.

Reserve a table at the Community Garage Sale

LARGO – Tables at Southwest Recreation Complex’s Community Garage Sale are now on sale. Tables cost $9 each and are limited to two per person. The complex will do all the advertising, setup, and clean up for the event, scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 23, 8 to noon, at 13120 Vonn Road. Space is limited. Set up on the day of the event begins at 7:15 a.m. This event includes free chair massages, health screenings, giveaways and back-to-school physicals as well as an open house. Explore all of the benefits that Southwest Recreation can offer with instructor demos, food, giveaways and more.

Women and Wealth Workshop offered

LARGO – Gene A. Melamud, MBA, CFP of Raymond James Investments will be leading a workshop on financial planning for women Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2 to 3 p.m., at Largo Community Center. An estimated 60 percent of American women manage the financial affairs for their household. Topics for this workshop include the Social Security gap; how stocks, bonds and other investments work; issues of divorce or widowhood and what to expect from a financial adviser. The workshop is free for Largo residents and costs $3 for nonresidents.

Paint at the Community Center

LARGO – Enjoy the beautiful park setting at the Largo Community Center or spend a fun evening with friends in the art room while creating your very own masterpiece. The center will host a Mimosa Morning Saturday, Sept. 20, 10 a.m., and a Painting Party Thursday, Sept. 25, 6:30 p.m. The cost is $40 for residents and $50 for nonresidents. It includes a 16-by-20-foot canvas, all paints and supplies and up to two mimosas or beer and wine, soda or water.

Meditation class offered

LARGO – The Parbawatiya Center will teach classes on meditation on Mondays, 6 to 7:15 p.m., at the Largo Community Center. The class will run Aug. 11 to Sept. 15. Reduce your stress and gain peace of mind by learning to meditate. All levels are welcome. The suggested donation for the class is $10. Daddy-Daughter dance features lower price

LARGO – The Largo Community Center will host the 37th annual Daddy Daughter Date Night Saturday, Sept. 20, 5 to 8 p.m. This year’s theme is “Fiesta, Fiesta.” Fathers and daughters of all ages will enjoy a night of dinner, dancing and games. Girls will be able to design maracas and try their hand at a pińata. This year, the event will cost less: only $39 per couple and $12 for each additional daughter. Tickets for this event are now on sale and can be purchased at any of the city’s recreation facilities.

Largo Central Park
The Largo Central Park is at 101 Central Park Drive. Within the park are the Largo Public Library, at 120 Central Park Drive and Largo Cultural Center, 105 Central Park Drive.

SPAF to host annual gala fundraiser

LARGO – The Suncoast Performing Arts Foundation will present “Dream Makers,” the 18th annual fundraiser gala for the Largo Cultural Center, on Saturday, Sept. 27, 6 p.m., at Largo Cultural Center. The gala will feature a cocktail reception, full course dinner, entertainment, silent auctions and dancing. Tickets are $125 a person. To purchase tickets, call 587-6793 or visit argoA­rts.c­om. Proceeds from this event go directly to the SPAF’s mission.
