Rain barrel workshop LARGO – A free rain barrel workshop will be presented on Saturday, Sept. 20, 9 to 10:30 a.m., at Pinellas County Extension, 12520 Ulmerton Road. Participants will learn how to set up a recycled plastic barrel to collect rain water from the roof. The water can then be used for plants. Rain barrels will be available for purchase. Wild Side workshop TARPON SPRINGS – A workshop, the Wild Side of Your Neighborhood: Backyard Buffet, will be offered on Saturday, Sept. 20, 1 to 2 p.m., at the Brooker Creek Preserve Environmental Education Center, 3940 Keystone Road. Hosted by the Environmental Lands Division’s education services staff, the workshop will explore ways native plants can enhance residential landscaping and turn backyards into a buffet for wildlife. Landscape tour PINELLAS COUNTY – The Native Plant Landscape Tour will be Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 20 and 21. The south tour is Saturday, 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The north tour is Sunday, noon to 4 p.m.
The self-guided tours feature six to eight yards demonstrating various landscape styles and stages of maturity. Low-maintenance native plants reduce the need for pesticides, fertilizer and water.
A tour booklet including maps and property descriptions will be provided at registration. The tour is free to Florida Native Plant Society members, $5 for nonmembers. Landscaping maintenance LARGO – Landscape maintenance, part of the Florida-friendly Landscaping Series, will be presented Tuesday, Sept. 23, 6:30 to 9 p.m., at Pinellas County Extension, 12520 Ulmerton Road. The class will cover Florida-friendly landscape design and maintenance principles. Proper pruning of trees and shrubs as well as using fertilizers and pesticides efficiently and effectively will be presented. Information about mulch will be reviewed. A garden tour will take place. Composting class CRYSTAL BEACH – A Pinellas County master gardener will host a free composting class Saturday, Sept. 27, 10 to 11 a.m., at Crystal Beach Community Hall, 517 Crystal Beach Ave. Participants will discover how easy it is to compost with master gardener John Kingsbury. Florida West Coast Orchid Society’s Annual Orchid Show and Sale LARGO – The Florida West Coast Orchid Society’s Annual Orchid Show and Sale will be Friday, Oct. 3, noon to 4 p.m.; Saturday, Oct. 4, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Sunday, Oct. 5, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Honeywell MinnReg Building, 6340 126th Ave. Call Brent Finke at 460-4606.
Lunch n Learn at Sunken Gardens ST. PETERSBURG - Sunken Gardens' new Lunch n Learn programs is set for Thursday, Oct. 16. The first program is "Gardening in Florida." A second program is scheduled on Thursday, Jan. 15 titled "Principles of Landscape Design 101." Both programs will be lead by Bill O'Grady, Horticultural Enthusiast. Florida Herb SocietyCLEARWATER - The Florida Herb Society meets third Tuesdays at the Clearwater Garden Club, 405 Seminole St., Clearwater. Herb swap is at 6:30 p.m. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. with speakers and interactive workshops. The membership fee is $20 per year from September through June and the first meeting is free.
