Garden Explorer Discovery Tour LARGO - Take a free, self-guided Garden Explorer Discovery Tour Monday through Friday in September from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Florida Botanical Gardens, 12520 Ulmerton Road, Largo.
Make the tour even more fun with a Discovery Backpack available for checkout from the Welcome Center. The backpack is loaded with I-spy sheets featuring art, flowers, insects and birds that may be found throughout the Gardens. A pair of binoculars and a map with interesting facts about plants are included. With more than 30 acres of cultivated gardens to explore, plan about two hours for this fun adventure. Tampa African Violet Society TAMPA – The Tampa African Violet Society will meet Friday, Sept. 21, 10 a.m., at the Seminole Garden Center, 5800 Central Ave. The program is How To Select African Violet Show Plants by award-winning judge and grower, Nancy Kast. Gardening for Wildlife Program ST. PETERSBURG - Learn how to create a garden area or a wildlife habitat that is friendly to Florida’s wildlife and the environment with Dale Armstrong from Pinellas County Extension at the Gardening for Wildlife program on Saturday, Sept. 22, 10 to 11 a.m. at Weedon Island Preserve, 1800 Weedon Drive N.E., St. Petersburg. Attract beautiful songbirds, hummingbirds, butterflies and other interesting wildlife to your yard. This program is free, and all ages are welcome. Register by calling 727-453-6500.
World Rivers Day Fest TARPON SPRINGS - Celebrate the third international World Rivers Day with a Fest to highlight the many values of Brooker Creek Preserve’s waterways on Saturday, Sept. 29, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Brooker Creek Preserve, 3940 Keystone Road, Tarpon Springs. The Fest immerses visitors in area waterways and offers practical ideas and materials to make a difference at home and in the community. Live music, shows, demonstrations, interactive exhibits, art displays by local artists, children’s activities and refreshments offered. The Fest is fun and informative for the entire family. Pinellas Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society CLEARWATER – The Pinellas Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society will host a membership meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 3, 7 p.m., Moccasin Lake Nature Park, 2750 Park Trail Lane. The meeting will focus on the Learning Gate Community School. The school places its lessons within the context of an environmental curriculum.
Plant sale TARPON SPRINGS – The Pinellas Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society will host a plant sale, Fall in Love with Natives, on Saturday, Oct. 6, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Brooker Creek Preserve, 3940 Keystone Road.
Native Plant Society field trip RIVERVIEW – The Pinellas Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society will sponsor a field trip to Balm-Boyette Scrub Nature Preserve on Saturday, Oct. 13. The preserve is a 4,916-acre property purchased by Hillsborough County in 1992. It is unique in the county due to the high percentage of undisturbed upland habitat that it contains, especially the rare scrub habitat. Many protected species of plants and animals have been documented on the site. Carpooling will be arranged.
Florida Style Gardening Series TARPON SPRINGS - Gardeners can cultivate their knowledge of successful techniques with experts from Pinellas County Extension during a five-session Florida Style Gardening course scheduled at the Brooker Creek Preserve Environmental Education Center in Tarpon Springs. Starting Wednesday, Oct. 3, classes will take place on five Wednesday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m. The course tuition is $60 for the series and covers the costs of notebooks and materials.
This comprehensive course addresses the challenges of gardening in Pinellas County while focusing on climate, environmental issues of water conservation and pollution, proper use of fertilizers and pesticides along with the best practices for lawn and landscape maintenance.
The class schedule for the Florida Style Gardening Series is as follows:
Session 1: Oct. 3 - Pinellas County Growing Conditions, Soils and Fertilizers
Session 2: Oct. 10 - Florida-Friendly Landscaping and Plant Installation and Establishment
Session 3: Oct. 17 - Florida-Friendly Landscape Management and Pruning
Session 4: Oct. 24 - Least Toxic Methods of Handling Landscape Pests
Session 5: Nov. 7 - Vegetable and Herb Gardening and Composting
