Fish Tales
Beach has plenty of action
Article published on Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008
Plenty of activity can be easily spotted up and down the beach, offering anglers an opportunity at catching a variety of species.

Mackerel are prevalent anywhere that birds can be seen working overhead. Cast or troll silver spoons on the outside of the bait schools.

The mackerel have been ranging in size from 12 to 16 inches with some bigger fish mixed in.

Tarpon and sharks are also getting in on the act; the sharks can be easily chummed up with frozen chum blocks and fresh cut bait. The key is to look for areas of off-colored water; these areas are where the bait is stirring up the bottom, leaving clouds of mud on the surface.

Fish with cut mackerel, mullet or shad on the bottom and you’ll keep busy with sharks and the occasional tarpon.

Flounder have made a resurgence from their red-tide woes of a couple of years ago. Anglers fishing the Reddington Long pier and Clearwater’s Pier 60 have been reporting excellent catches of flounder for a couple of weeks now. Soft-plastic jigs in root beer and glitter gold have been working best.

Be sure to check all channel markers while on the move. Cobia have begun their fall migration southward and being ready for them can make the difference. Cobia are usually a good indicator of when the kingfish will arrive and by the looks of all the activity taking place on the beach it won’t be long.
