Composting class
CRYSTAL BEACH – A Pinellas County master gardener will host a free composting class Saturday, Sept. 27, 10 to 11 a.m., at Crystal Beach Community Hall, 517 Crystal Beach Ave. Participants will discover how easy it is to compost with master gardener John Kingsbury. To register, call 582-2673.

Tampa African Violet Society meeting
TAMPA - The Tampa African Violet Society will meet on Thursday, Oct. 2, 7 p.m., at the Ragan Community Center, 1200 East Lake Ave, Tampa. Jay Sespico, Jerry Kast, Therese Lynam and Lynne Wilson will point out the differences between African Violet Miniature, Semiminiature, Standard, and Trailers. Visitors are always welcome. Brooker to host plant sale
TARPON SPRINGS – There will be a native plant sale on Saturday, Oct. 4, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Brooker Creek Preserve, 3940 Keystone Road. Florida plants will be celebrated at this native plant sale. Workshops will be offered throughout the day. Admission is free. Call 453-6800.

Florida West Coast Orchid Society’s Annual Orchid Show and Sale
LARGO – The Florida West Coast Orchid Society’s Annual Orchid Show and Sale will be Friday, Oct. 3, noon to 4 p.m.; Saturday, Oct. 4, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Sunday, Oct. 5, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Honeywell MinnReg Building, 6340 126th Ave. Call Brent Finke at 460-4606.

Extension to host rain barrel workshop
LARGO – A Rain Barrel Workshop will be offered on Saturday, Oct. 11, 9 to 10:30 a.m., at Pinellas County Extension, 12520 Ulmerton Road. Attendees will learn about how to set up a recycled plastic barrel to collect rain water from the roof. The water can be used for landscape plants and potted plants. Rain barrels will be available for purchase. The workshop is free. To register, call 582-2673.

Lunch n Learn at Sunken Gardens
ST. PETERSBURG - Sunken Gardens' new Lunch n Learn programs is set for Thursday, Oct. 16. The first program is "Gardening in Florida." A second program is scheduled on Thursday, Jan. 15 titled "Principles of Landscape Design 101." Both programs will be lead by Bill O'Grady, Horticultural Enthusiast. A box lunch will be served and a cash bar will be available. Pre-registration is required and the fee is $15 for members and $20 for nonmembers. To register, call 727-551-3102. Orchid Friends’ Orchid and Tropical Plant Sale
ST. PETERSBURG - Orchid Friends is hosting an Orchid and Tropical Plant Sale on Saturday, Oct. 18, 9 a.m. to noon, at 343 39th Ave. N. in St. Petersburg. Budget prices and advice on orchid care and culture included. For more information, call 727-536-7717.

Garden tours set
PINELLAS COUNTY – Garden tours of Florida-Friendly Yards in Mid-Pinellas County will be offered on Saturday, Oct. 18, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Addresses will be provided by Pinellas County Extension. The tour, sponsored by Pinellas County Extension Florida Yards and Neighborhoods, will provide a great opportunity to meet and speak with the owners who created and maintained beautiful gardens using sustainable practices. Participants will self-drive to addresses that will be provided at registration sites that will be announced at a later date. Carpooling is encouraged. Cost is $5 a group. Florida Herb Society
CLEARWATER - The Florida Herb Society meets third Tuesdays at the Clearwater Garden Club, 405 Seminole St., Clearwater. The next meeting is scheduled on Tuesday, Oct. 21. Herb swap is at 6:30 p.m. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. with speakers and interactive workshops. The membership fee is $20 per year from September through June and the first meeting is free.
