Fish Tales
With a break in the weather, fishing should pick up
Article published on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2007
Wind and rain associated with tropical lows have brought our water temperature down considerably.

Eighty-degree water will have fish more active throughout the whole day. Add to that good tides brought on by this week’s full moon and we should have the right layout for some good fishing.

Bull redfish are showing up in traditional places for this time of year: Jetties, piers and certain grass flats are holding schools of these 15- to 20-pound fish. Flats anglers should keep their eye out for these fish around Tierra Verde, Pinellas Point and the east side of I-275 near the Sunshine Skyway. These fish are easy to spot but can be difficult to get to eat artificials.

Corked live pinfish are your best bet for hooking one of these giants.

Jetties are natural hangouts for bull redfish. They congregate in the passes this time of year before they move offshore to spawn. Cut bait, such as mullet and ladyfish, fished on the bottom are great baits as well as are live pinfish or a chunk of blue crab.

Plenty of pompano can still be caught around area passes as well as some of the inland bridges. Fish the edges of the flats surrounding the channel leading into the pass. Silly Willy jigs are always best.

As far as bridges go, the Meisner and Tierra Verde bridges are excellent spots as is the Bayway.

In our northern county the Dunedin Causeway also produces good catches. Rig your Silly Willy jig with a teaser fly when fishing the bridges. This will give you a second chance on short striking pomps.

Docklight fishing is getting better and better and with all the redfish around right now it’s pretty easy to keep the action going even if the snook aren’t cooperating. Lights around Madeira Beach, Treasure Island and Pass-A-Grille are good places to find plenty of both species.

Live pilchards and ballyhoo are your best baits, but it might be a good idea to have some live shrimp along with you in case bait is tough to come by.

Until next week – GET BENT!
