Article published on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2007 |
PINELLAS COUNTY – Jamie Madewell has been named the softball coach at St. Petersburg College.
She replaces Lance Lamport who is retiring in November.
Lamport completed 21 years as the college’s coach. He leaves with a record of 847-427, 15 trips to the state tournament and 25 All-American players.
“Replacing Coach Lamport is not an easy job,” Athletic Director Mark Strickland said. “We are confident that we have found the right person with Jamie.
“She brings a high energy level to the job and has a great reputation for having outstanding players on and off the field.”
Madewell will begin her St. Petersburg College career Oct. 1.
She comes to the college from Southern Arkansas University, where she has been the head coach the last two years. The team finished 27-27 in 2006-07 and 26-31 in 2005-06.
She also has been an assistant coach at Delta State University and the University of Alabama in Birmingham. Her playing career in both softball and volleyball was at the University of Alabama Huntsville.
She earned a bachelor’s degree from UAH in business administration and a master’s degree in physical education at UAB.
“I have coached at the Division I and II levels, as well as high school, which I think will be a great asset for me preparing athletes for the next level,” Madewell said.
“I have recruited in Florida many times and know there are many talented players in the state. That’s why I am so glad to be here and with a program that has a long history of winning.”
