World Rivers Day Fest
TARPON SPRINGS - Celebrate the third international World Rivers Day with a Fest to highlight the many values of Brooker Creek Preserve’s waterways on Saturday, Sept. 29, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Brooker Creek Preserve, 3940 Keystone Road, Tarpon Springs. The Fest immerses visitors in area waterways and offers practical ideas and materials to make a difference at home and in the community.

Live music, shows, demonstrations, interactive exhibits, art displays by local artists, children’s activities and refreshments offered. The Fest is fun and informative for the entire family. Free admission. For information, call 727-453-6800.

Pinellas Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society
CLEARWATER – The Pinellas Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society will host a membership meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 3, 7 p.m., Moccasin Lake Nature Park, 2750 Park Trail Lane. The meeting will focus on the Learning Gate Community School. The school places its lessons within the context of an environmental curriculum.

Florida Style Gardening Series
TARPON SPRINGS - Gardeners can cultivate their knowledge of successful techniques with experts from Pinellas County Extension during a five-session Florida Style Gardening course scheduled at the Brooker Creek Preserve Environmental Education Center in Tarpon Springs. Starting Wednesday, Oct. 3, classes will take place on five Wednesday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m. The course tuition is $60 for the series and covers the costs of notebooks and materials.

This comprehensive course addresses the challenges of gardening in Pinellas County while focusing on climate, environmental issues of water conservation and pollution, proper use of fertilizers and pesticides along with the best practices for lawn and landscape maintenance.

The class schedule for the Florida Style Gardening Series is as follows:

Session 1: Oct. 3 - Pinellas County Growing Conditions, Soils and Fertilizers

Session 2: Oct. 10 - Florida-Friendly Landscaping and Plant Installation and Establishment

Session 3: Oct. 17 - Florida-Friendly Landscape Management and Pruning

Session 4: Oct. 24 - Least Toxic Methods of Handling Landscape Pests

Session 5: Nov. 7 - Vegetable and Herb Gardening and Composting

Master Gardener plant sale
LARGO - Arrive early for the Master Gardener Plant Sale on Saturday, Oct. 6, 9 a.m. to noon, at Pinellas County Extension, 12520 Ulmerton Road. Choose from a wide selection of plants at great prices. The variety of plants includes numerous native Florida plants, herbs, butterfly-friendly plants as well as shrubs, trees and seeds. TARPON SPRINGS – The Pinellas Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society will host a plant sale, Fall in Love with Natives, on Saturday, Oct. 6, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Brooker Creek Preserve, 3940 Keystone Road.

Native Plant Society field trip
RIVERVIEW – The Pinellas Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society will sponsor a field trip to Balm-Boyette Scrub Nature Preserve on Saturday, Oct. 13. The preserve is a 4,916-acre property purchased by Hillsborough County in 1992. It is unique in the county due to the high percentage of undisturbed upland habitat that it contains, especially the rare scrub habitat. Many protected species of plants and animals have been documented on the site. Carpooling will be arranged.

The World of Bromeliads Discovery Tour
LARGO - Discover the world of bromeliads with the Florida Botanical Gardens’ staff on Saturday, Oct. 13, 1 p.m., at the Florida Botanical Gardens, 12520 Ulmerton Road. Learn basic identification, cultivation and the fascinating history of this group. These interesting epiphytes come in all shapes and sizes, and a large, impressive collection lives at the Gardens. Growing Citrus in Your Yard
LARGO - Join Horticulturist Allen Cordell to learn the proper care of citrus trees in your landscape along with which citrus varieties are best suited to our area on Tuesday, Oct. 16, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., at Pinellas County Extension, 12520 Ulmerton Road. Garden Tours of Florida-Friendly Yards
PINELLAS COUNTY - Sign up for the semi-annual tour of Florida-Friendly Yards in the historic Kenwood Neighborhood courtesy of Pinellas County Extension on Saturday, Oct. 20, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Meet and speak with owners who created beautiful gardens while keeping the environment in mind. Participants drive to addresses that will be provided at registration. Florida Yards and Neighborhood staff and Master Gardeners will be on hand at several of the sites to answer gardening questions. Compost Happens Workshop
LARGO - Think composting is a mystery? Have you been confused about what can or cannot be added to the compost bin? Join Pinellas County Extension educators for this informative program on Saturday, Oct. 20, 10 to 11:30 a.m., at Pinellas County Extension, 12520 Ulmerton Road to discover how easy it is to create compost to use in your garden and landscape. Attending Pinellas County residents receive a free 7.5 cubic feet compost bin for a completed survey handed out at the workshop. To register, call 727-582-2673.
