October is Florida Greenways and Trails Month
Article published on Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2006
TALLAHASSEE - Encouraging Floridians and visitors to head outdoors with family and friends, Gov. Jeb Bush recognized October as Florida Greenways and Trails Month. Greenways and trails provide recreational opportunities, protect Florida's natural resources, preserve historical and cultural sites and connect communities.

"By celebrating Greenways and Trails Month, Florida is encouraging outdoor recreation and environmental stewardship," said Florida Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Colleen M. Castille. "Greenways and trails conserve resources and provide nature-based recreational opportunities for residents and visitors."

More than 150 events around the state are planned to celebrate Florida Greenways and Trails Month this year, such a family fun fishing day on Saturday, Oct. 7, 8 to 11 a.m., at Taylor Park in Largo.

Activities at this free event include fishing for prizes for children age 14 and younger; live music; 1-mile family fun run or walk; and more. Admission is free.

Fishing poles and bait will be provided for children. Experienced anglers are welcomed to bring their own pole. Prizes will be awarded to anglers 14 and under for the first catch, largest fish, multiple catches and more.

The event is sponsored by the Pinellas County Parks and Recreation Department and co-sponsored by Florida Fish and Wildlife and Kiwanis of Seminole Breakfast.

The Kiwanis Club of Seminole Breakfast will offer coffee or juice and a donut for a $1 donation. Proceeds go toward the purchase of worms for the fishing days.

Taylor Park is at 1100 Eighth Ave. S.W. For more information, call the Pinellas County Parks and Recreation Department at 464-3347.
