Garden Tours of Florida-Friendly Yards PINELLAS COUNTY - Sign up for the semi-annual tour of Florida-Friendly Yards in the historic Kenwood Neighborhood courtesy of Pinellas County Extension on Saturday, Oct. 20, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Meet and speak with owners who created beautiful gardens while keeping the environment in mind. Participants drive to addresses that will be provided at registration. Florida Yards and Neighborhood staff and Master Gardeners will be on hand at several of the sites to answer gardening questions. Orchid Friends Sale ST. PETERSBURG – There will be an Orchid Friends Sale on Saturday, Oct. 20, 9 a.m. to noon, at 343 39th Ave. N. Call 536-7717.
Compost Happens Workshop LARGO - Think composting is a mystery? Have you been confused about what can or cannot be added to the compost bin? Join Pinellas County Extension educators for this informative program on Saturday, Oct. 20, 10 to 11:30 a.m., at Pinellas County Extension, 12520 Ulmerton Road to discover how easy it is to create compost to use in your garden and landscape. Attending Pinellas County residents receive a free 7.5 cubic feet compost bin for a completed survey handed out at the workshop. To register, call 727-582-2673.
African Violet Society show CLEARWATER – The Upper Pinellas African Violet Society will host a show on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 26 and 27, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at St. Matthias Lutheran Church, 2751 Sunset Point Road. The show will feature many varieties of flowering African violets, starter plants, leaves and the other gesneriads. UPAVS has one of the largest selections of African violet-related supplies for sale in the state. There will be members on hand to answer questions on growing violets and the other gesneriads. Native Plant Society meeting PINELLAS COUNTY – The Pinellas Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society will meet on Wednesday, Nov. 7, 7 p.m., at Moccasin Lake Nature Park, 2750 Park Trail Lane, Clearwater. Cindy Peacock will present a program about integrated pest management, instructing attendees on how to identify beneficial as well as harmful organisms by monitoring plants. The society also will host a night hike on Saturday, Nov. 10, 5:30 p.m., beginning at the education center at Boyd Hill Nature Park, 1101 Country Club Way S., St. Petersburg. Call 544-7341.
Kenwood Garden Tour ST. PETERSBURG – A dozen homes with a diversity of gardens will be on display during the Historic Kenwood Garden Tour on Sunday, Nov. 18, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The tour, planned by The Historic Kenwood Garden Workshop, will feature a wide variety of gardens including traditional, cottage and tropical. Drip irrigation and trench composting demonstrations along with informational sessions will be held at several homes throughout the day. Additionally, raw seasonal honey from Eden’s Nectar and native Florida plants from Twigs and Leaves will be available.
The event is open to the public and tickets are $10. Maps, information and tickets can be picked up the day of the event at Craftsman House, 2955 Central Ave. For group sales, please contact HKGardens@msn.com or call 321-2081.
The HKGW Garden Tour is a fundraiser for the Historic Kenwood Garden Workshop.
Through the sale of homegrown plants to the creation and sale of a recipe/storybook the Historic Kenwood Garden Workshop has helped grow the community by providing: filled backpacks for back-to-school needs for kids K-12; complete holiday meals for area seniors; Christmas gifts for youngsters in the care of the Guardian Ad Litem program; gifts and supplies to young people affected by HIV; assistance in maintaining plantings of neighborhood corners; and yard makeovers and spruce-ups which are visual reminders of the importance of nature in our living spaces.
