St. Pete Classic canceled
ST. PETE BEACH – Motion Sports Management announced the 2010 St. Pete Beach Classic 10K/5K Run and Walk/Health and Fitness Expo has been canceled. MSM president Wendy Johnson has been facing significant health issues since shortly after the 2009 event.

“Our concentration is on getting Wendy fully recovered,” said Al Johnson of MSM and Wendy’s husband. “We appreciate the thoughts and prayers of our friends and partners and look forward to resuming the St. Pete Beach Classic in 2011.”

During the first six St. Pete Beach Classic events, more than 9,500 runners participated. Charitable beneficiaries were Tampa Bay Youth Running, the St. Pete Free Clinic and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Youth Winter Basketball League registration
LARGO - Registration has started for Southwest’s Youth Winter Basketball League. Boys and girls, ages 5 to 17 will learn fundamental basketball skills, strategy and teamwork to better their game. Younger age groups will focus on player development, while more experienced players will participate in play-offs and an end of the season all-star game. Games are played on Saturdays beginning Jan. 30 through the end of March. League cost is $45 for residents and $56.25 for nonresidents, and all participants will receive a league jersey. Mandatory evaluations are scheduled for Friday, Jan. 15. Practices and games are at the Southwest Recreation Complex, located at 13120 Vonn Road. To register, call 518-3125.

Turkey Trot 10K training
LARGO – A training program for the St. Petersburg Times annual Turkey Trot 10K is set for Tuesdays, 7 to 7:45 p.m., Oct. 6 through Nov. 24. The class will conclude with the 10K race, set for Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26. Registration is $48 for residents and $60 for nonresidents and includes the 10K registration fee. The class is open to all runners, ages 16 and up. Call 518-3021.

Recreation Outreach Ministry
LARGO – Recreation Outreach Ministry will sponsor baseball, softball and T-ball practice beginning the week of Nov. 9 at First Baptist Church of Indian Rocks, 12685 Ulmerton Road. The programs, for players ages 5 to 14, will kick off with an evaluation on Saturday, Oct. 24, 9 to 11 a.m., on the fields behind the Indian Rocks Christian School campus. All players, except T-ball players ages 5 to 6, must attend the evaluation. Evaluated players will be drafted onto teams by coaches the following week. The season will continue through Feb. 6, 2010. Recreation Outreach Ministry is an instructional and competitive league that provides coed T-ball, coed coach’s pitch, player pitch baseball for the boys and player pitch softball for the girls. Largo High silent auction

St. Petersburg Power and Sailboat Show
ST. PETERSBURG – The 32nd annual St. Petersburg Power and Sailboat Show will be held at Mahaffey Theater and Albert Whitted Park Dec. 3 through 6. The show will feature more than 400 power boats and 50 sailboats anchored in the floating dock marina, two tents filled with boating and sailing accessories, equipment and gear for holiday shopping, free sailboat rides, boating and sailing seminars and a cocktail barge. Show times are Thursday, Dec. 3, noon to 6 p.m.; Friday, Dec. 4, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 5, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Sunday, Dec. 6, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children age 6 to 15 and free for children 5 and younger. Soccer classes
LARGO – A soccer program is offering classes for children 3 to 5 years old at the Largo Soccer Complex on Belcher Road. Class time for Squirt Soccer is 4:30 to 5 p.m. or 5 to 5:30 p.m. every Thursday. The cost is $35. Only 15 spots available. Each child should bring a size 3 soccer ball and water to every class. Squirt Soccer is designed to help children learn the physical skills, develop confidence and a positive self-concept that apply to other sports and to life in general. Fitness swimming, water exercise
LARGO - The public is invited to participate in fitness swimming and water exercise classes at Southwest Pool, 13120 Vonn Road. In November, operating hours will be Monday through Friday only, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. As with any exercise program, check with your doctor before starting.

A fitness swimming program, swim the Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail, is free with pool admission. Participants track their miles swum to reach their favorite destinations along the trail. At the completion of the 47-mile trail, a specially designed T-shirt is provided to finishers. Participants must have a monthly admission pass, $26/$32.50, or pay a daily admission fee, $2.50/$3/$6.

An aqua fit and trim water exercise class is led by a certified instructor and is offered daily to adults from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. The program includes a half hour of cardio work and a half hour of working large muscle groups with special equipment. The class is conducted in waist- to chest-deep water and lifeguards are on duty. Participants must have an exercise punch card, $48/$60, or pay a per class fee, $4/$5/$8.
