Texas birding adventure CLEARWATER – The Clearwater Audubon Society is hosting a Texas birding adventure on Monday, Dec. 28 to Saturday, Jan. 2. Take a multi-day trip to Texas, which is a major flyway for migratory birds and has some interesting native species. Call 447-4785 for details and cost.
Brooker Creek guided hike TARPON SPRINGS – A free guided hike will be offered on Saturday, Nov. 21, 9 to 11 a.m., at Brooker Creek Preserve, 3940 Keystone Road. Attendees will take a walk through time on a guided hike along the Brooker Creek Preserve Education Trail. Hikers will see how the land has changed over time and discuss the ecological footprints left by those changes. All ages are welcome, but children younger than 6 may find the hike challenging. Registration is required by Friday, Nov. 20, noon. Call 453-6800.
Weedon Island guided hike ST. PETERSBURG – A free guided hike will be offered on Saturday, Nov. 21, 9 to 11 a.m., at Weedon Island Preserve, 1800 Weedon Drive NE. Attendees will join in a two-hour hike with the experts through Weedon Island Preserve’s coastal mangrove and upland ecosystems. Hikers will learn about the coastal environment and the preserve’s early residents. Participants should meet at the classroom patio at 8:50 a.m. Registration is required by Friday, Nov. 20, 2 p.m. Call 453-6506.
Nature walk TIERRA VERDE – A nature walk will be presented on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 21-22, 10 to 11 a.m., at Fort De Soto Park, 3500 Pinellas Bayway S. Participants will enjoy the beauty of Fort De Soto Park with a free one-hour nature walk great for the entire family. Hikers will explore the Campground Nature Walk. Registration is required. Moccasin Lake Nature Park bird watching walk CLEARWATER – The Clearwater Audubon Society Moccasin is hosting a Lake Nature Park bird watching walk on Saturday, Dec. 5, 8 a.m. Meet in the parking lot, 2750 Park Trail Lane. Look for songbirds, water birds and raptors in the oak hammock. Cost is $2 for children ages 3 to 12 and $3 for people age 13 and older.
Clearwater Audubon Society meeting CLEARWATER – The Clearwater Audubon Society meets Monday, Dec. 7, 7:30 p.m., at Moccasin Lake Nature Park, 2750 Park Trail Lane. The program is called Quest Ecology Monitoring Bird Migration with guest speakers Melanie Higgins and Lauren Deaner. Higgins, a public involvement specialist, and Deaner, an ecologist, will present methods and results of a study of the use of restored habitat by neo-tropical migratory songbirds.
Bird walk at Brooker Creek CLEARWATER – The Clearwater Audubon Society is hosting a bird walk at Brooker Creek Preserve on Saturday, Dec. 12, 8 a.m. Meet in the education center parking lot, 3940 Keystone Road, Tarpon Springs. See migratory and resident songbirds and raptors along the three miles of boardwalks and sand trails.
Annual Christmas bird count CLEARWATER – The Clearwater Audubon Society is hosting the annual Christmas bird count on Sunday, Dec. 27, 8 a.m. Volunteers are needed and no experience is necessary. Call to learn how to help in the nationwide bird census and be a part of a more than 100-year-old tradition. Call 772-7584.
Weedon Island exhibit ST. PETERSBURG – The exhibit Just Landscapes will continue through Dec. 31, at Weedon Island Preserve, 1800 Weedon Drive N.E. A native of Missouri, Kevin Grass spent time while in high school on a wide variety of commissioned works ranging from portraits and landscapes to campaign signs and car decorations. Currently, he is an assistant professor of art at St. Petersburg College. Visitors can enjoy this free exhibit during normal center hours. Hours are Thursday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call 453-6500.
Brooker Creek exhibit TARPON SPRINGS –Living Heritage is on exhibit through Jan. 2, 2010 at Brooker Creek Preserve, 3940 Keystone Road. The exhibit by Clearwater’s Carlton Ward, photojournalist and author, combines the stories of the Florida landscape with the cultural heritage of the legendary Florida cowboy. Ward’s new book “Florida Cowboys: Keepers of the Last Frontier” relates both his passion and perspective into Florida’s vanishing history. Call 453-6800.
