Soccer with santa

Bird walk
CLEARWATER – Join bird lovers on a bird walk Saturday, Dec. 6, 8 a.m., at Moccasin Lake Nature Park, 2750 Park Trail Lane, Clearwater. Fort De Soto nature walk
TIERRA VERDE – There will be a guided nature walk offered on Saturday, Dec. 6, 10 a.m., at Fort De Soto County Park, 3500 Pinellas Bayway S. Hikers will explore the mangrove area. Participants should sign up at park headquarters and meet at the east end of the park. Call 582-2267.

Weedon Island Preserve hike
ST. PETERSBURG – Education services volunteers from the Environmental Lands Division will host a guided hike on Saturday, Dec. 6, 9 to 11 a.m., at Weedon Island Preserve, 1800 Weedon Drive N.E. Hikers will traverse the coastal mangrove and upland ecosystems of the preserve while learning about the coastal environment and the early residents of Weedon Island Preserve. Participants should bring water and a snack for this two-hour hike. A hat and closed-toe shoes are also recommended. Reserve a space by 2 p.m. on the Friday prior to the tour. Winter Animals program
TARPON SPRINGS – Beyond Pinellas: Winter Animals will be presented on Saturday, Dec. 6, 1 to 2 p.m., at the Brooker Creek Preserve Environmental Education Center, 3940 Keystone Road. Cheerleading program
MADEIRA BEACH – The city of Madeira Beach is offering a cheerleading program for kindergartners through fifth grade. Cost is $70 for residents and $85 for nonresidents. Registration dates are: Saturdays, Dec. 6 and 13, noon to 2 p.m. The program begins in January and goes through March. All squads will cheer at Madeira Beach Middle School. Guided nature walk

Weedon exhibit opening
ST. PETERSBURG – An exhibit opening for Obscured by Time: Discovering Florida’s Gulf Coast Ancient People will be Sunday, Dec. 7, 2 to 3:30 p.m., at Weedon Island Preserve’s Cultural and Natural History Center, 1800 Weedon Drive N.E. The opening will feature a dynamic co-presentation by artist Hermann Trappman and Terry Tomalin, outdoors editor for the St. Petersburg Times. They will relate their research into the early people of Florida who lived in the rich coastal environments of this region. Trappman works with archaeologists to create paintings of native prehistoric existence. Tomalin studies ancient maritime heritage and has paddled a dugout canoe along the Gulf coast. Trappman’s exhibit will be on display during normal center hours through Feb. 1.

Senior softball league seeks players
ST. PETERSBURG – The Woodlawn Senior League softball organization is looking for players, 50 and over, to play on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. Play begins at 9 a.m. at Woodlawn Recreational Complex at the corner of 16th Street North and 13th Avenue North. Four teams play slow-pitch softball. Book Time at Brooker Creek
TARPON SPRINGS – Book Time at Brooker Creek will present “The Lorax,” by Dr. Seuss, on Thursday, Dec. 11, 10:30 to 11:15 a.m., at Brooker Creek Preserve, 3940 Keystone Road. Book Time at Brooker Creek is designed to connect preschool children to the wonders of the natural world. “The Lorax” is a story about how cutting down trees can affect the animals that depend on them. Wee-time at Weedon
ST. PETERSBURG – Wee-time at Weedon will present “Where Would I Be in an Evergreen Tree” on Thursday, Dec. 11, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., at Weedon Island Preserve, 1800 Weedon Drive N.E. This program is designed to introduce preschool children to the wonders of the natural world. Each month children are treated to a variety of stories, puppet shows and hands-on activities that connect them to their environment. “Where Would I Be in an Evergreen Tree,” by Jennifer Blomgren, celebrates the many creatures and plants that make their home in, under, and around the abundant branches of an evergreen tree. Say No To Drugs Holiday Classic
CLEARWATER – The 20th annual Say No To Drugs Holiday Classic race is set for Saturday, Dec. 20 in downtown Clearwater. Pre-registration for the 5K and 10K races is $17 or cost on race day is $22. The 1-mile Rids Race and Stroller Walk is $8 in advance or $13 on race day. Kids 13 and younger cost $8. Races begin at 8 a.m. Race-day registration is at the Harborview Center. There also will be a post-race pancake breakfast at the Harborview Center, complimentary massage and chiropractic services, giveaways, goody bags, T-shirts, awards for the top runners, and $2,000 in prize money. Dodgeball league registration
SEMINOLE – The City of Seminole Recreation Center plans to begin its six-team co-ed dodgeball league in January. Teams will play five regular season games, one each week, followed by one week of playoffs. Teams must be registered by a Seminole Recreation Center member and have a minimum of two members per team. The fee is $75 per team. Rosters consist of up to 12 players with six on the court at one time. Each team needs to start at least one female player per game. All participants must be at least 16. Golf fitness program
BELLEAIR – A 4-week golf fitness program will be offered at the Dimmitt Community Center by Joe Quinzi, certified Titleist fitness trainer and PGA instructor, and Sue Riley, certified Pilates instructor and personal trainer. The instructors will be working together to teach proper stretch techniques for maximum benefit to improve a golfer’s game and avoid injuries. They also will cover specific positions in the golf swing and which swing methods are suitable to a particular physique and body type. Ecology workshop
TARPON SPRINGS – An adult ecology workshop, Fungi: Exploring the Wood Wide Web, will be offered on Friday, Dec. 5, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Brooker Creek Preserve Environmental Education Center, 3940 Keystone Road. Presented by Dr. Diane TeStrake, professor of biology at the University of South Florida, the workshop will provide unique opportunities to explore focused topics in natural history under the guidance of noted authorities. Hands-on field and laboratory investigations will teach ecology, use of taxonomic keys and techniques. Workshops present college-level instruction and are designed to accommodate participants with a broad range of experience. Amateur botanists are welcome, as are those wanting to improve their current skills. After an introduction to morphology and collection techniques, participants will venture out to collect samples around the education center. An identification lab session that includes a short film will round out the afternoon activities. Admission is $40 a person. Space is limited to 25 participants. Youth Flag Football tryouts
SAFETY HARBOR – Kids are invited to play in the North Pinellas Youth Flag Football League. The league is designed for boys and girls and the Safety Harbor teams will challenge others from Dunedin, Largo and Palm Harbor. There will be one or two weeknight practices with Saturday games. Suncoast 5K Run
SEMINOLE – The inaugural Suncoast Combined Federal Campaign 5K Run and 1-mile Fun Walk is set for Sunday, Dec. 7, at Bay Pines Medical Center, 9500 Bay Pines Blvd. The 5K race begins at 8 a.m., followed by the 1-mile walk at 9 a.m. and an awards ceremony at 9:30 a.m. The entry fee for the 5K race is $20 before Dec. 3 and $25 thereafter. St. Petersburg Bowl Fan 5K
ST. PETERSBURG – Motion Sports Management will host the Inaugural St. Petersburg Bowl Fan 5K on Saturday, Dec. 20, 8 a.m. The event is being produced in partnership with ESPN and the St. Petersburg Bowl, the latest addition to the NCAA post season college football schedule. Proceeds will benefit the Tampa Bay Youth Running and R’Club. The 5K will start adjacent to Tropicana Field. Chronotrack Technology, the latest in timing devices, will be used. The finish will be video-taped and portions will be used during pre-game show on ESPN2. A One-Mile Fun Run will start at 9 a.m. The first 1,500 runners of the 5K to cross the finish line outside of Ferg’s Sports Bar on Central Avenue will be given a free ticket to the St. Petersburg Bowl and all participants will enjoy a post race party and awards ceremony hosted by Ferg’s. Horse shows
PINELLAS PARK – The Bay Area Horseman’s Association has scheduled a series of shows at Helen Howarth Park, 6301 94th Ave. Events will include the following show classes: English, Hunter, Over Fence, Saddle Seat, Gait, Ponies, Halter, Showmanship, Western Pleasure and Trail. McGough Nature Park Rec Rompers
LARGO – The city’s Recreation, Parks and Arts Department host Rec Rompers for children aged 3 to 5 at McGough Nature Park, 11901 146th St. N. The licensed program will be geared toward learning. Treasure Island exercise classes

BELLEAIR – Certified pilates instructor and personal trainer Sue Riley offers group reformer classes and one-on-one training sessions upstairs at the Dimmitt Community Center, 918 Osceola Road.

Group reformer classes are Mondays at 9 a.m., Tuesdays at 6 p.m., and Wednesdays at 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Pilates strengthens abdominals, stretches tight muscles and tones the whole body. Stroller Fit exercise classes

Nia classes planned

Personal training
SEMINOLE – The Seminole Recreation Center is offering personal training sessions with Chip Wright, a certified personal trainer. Sessions are $50 per one-hour session. Call 391-8345.

Swimming lessons
ST. PETE BEACH - The city of St. Pete Beach offers Learn to Swim Classes for all ages through the American Red Cross. From infants six months of age to seniors, classes will teach proper technique and tips for safety in any water environment. Classes are held Monday through Thursday and run in two-week sessions of 45-minute classes. Classes are available morning and evening to fit every schedule. Permit needed by boaters
PINELLAS COUNTY - An important reminder for boaters: The State of Florida law requires that anyone born after Sept. 30, 1980, must obtain a Boating Safety Education I.D. card (an operating permit), issued before piloting any boat with an engine of 10 horsepower or greater.

Boating classes to get under way

USCG Auxiliary teaches boater safety

Sailing group
GULFPORT – Sea Scout Ship is a coed Venture Scout organization for teens that builds self-confident young leaders who understand the importance of team work on the water and in everyday life. The group meets Wednesdays at 7 p.m., at Boca Ciega Yacht Club and is for parents and teenagers age 14 and up of area families from St. Pete Beach, South Pasadena, Gulfport and St. Petersburg. The teens learn how to fix, and race boats and participate in difficult water-related games. Water Walkers

Tennis clinics
SEMINOLE – Monday night is tennis night at the city of Seminole Tennis Club Park, 7283 113th St., Seminole. Students can sign up and prepay at the Recreation Center office for a monthly session or choose a Show and Go class for a one-time fee. Monthly sessions are $40 per four-week session. Calisthenics and Conditioning
SEMINOLE – The Seminole Recreation Division is offering a new fitness program called Calisthenics & Conditioning by Core Fitness on Thursdays from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Recreation Center. Cost is $7 a class. The one-hour class begins with basic stretching, then moves immediately into various exercises, abdominal exercises, sprinting, sporting drills, plyometrics and other conditioning drills. The class meets in the gymnasium and remains inside for an hour. The program is for all fitness levels. Call 391-8345.

Pickleball lessons
SEMINOLE – The Seminole Recreation Division offers pickleball Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Seminole Recreation Center. Pickleball is a sport much like tennis, badminton and racquetball. City recreation officials say it is especially good for seniors because the net is only 3 feet high and players use a hard whiffleball with wooden paddles. Recreation personnel teach participants how to play. Free for participants with a recreation card.

Flex and strength class offered
LARGO – The city will offer a chance for patrons to enjoy the relaxing sounds of the water sprays while learning techniques that allow flexibility, strength, relaxation, and stress reduction in an outdoor environment. The classes will meet Wednesday mornings from 10 to 11 at the Highland Family Aquatic Center. Call 518-3019.

Water workout classes
PINELLAS COUNTY – Aqua Slim water workout classes are offered Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 9 a.m., at the Long Center, 1502 N. Belcher Road, Clearwater; and Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:15 a.m., at Bonsai Health and Fitness Center, 400 Lake Ave. N.W., Largo. Also offered are fibromyalgia and arthritis classes on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays, 10:30 a.m., and Mondays and Thursdays, 5:30 p.m., at Bonsai Health and Fitness Center. These exercises can improve joint flexibility, offer range of motion and strengthening exercises while providing a fun, social opportunity for men and women of all ages. Swimming is not required. CLEARWATER BEACH ­ Clearwater Parks and Recreation offers Zumba fitness classes at the Clearwater Beach Recreation Center Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to noon and Thursdays from noon to 1 p.m. Zumba is a high-energy cardio-dance class designed to be fun and easy on the body. Participants work out to a combination of Latin rhythms including meringue, salsa, calypso, samba and tango. All ages and fitness levels are welcome. The cost is $3.75 with a play pass, $5 with a Clearwater recreation card and $6.25 without. The recreation center is at 69 Bay Esplanade. Call 462-6138.

Stretch on the beach
ST. PETE BEACH – The city of St. Pete Beach Recreation Department’s Stretching on the Beach program meets Tuesdays, 9 to 9:45 a.m., at Upham Beach. The department may add a Thursday class if there is enough interest. The class entails enhancing flexibility, toning the body and stretching to appropriate music. Participants enjoy a beautiful view and wonderful breezes. All ages and genders are welcome. Participants should wear comfortable clothing and bring a mat or towel. Cost is $2 a person. Jazzercise classes
BELLEAIR – Jazzercise dance-fitness classes will be on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., and on Thursdays and Saturdays, 8:30 a.m., at Dimmitt Community Center. Laura Price, instructor, has moved her classes to the center. All area residents are welcome. The center is on Ponce de Leon Boulevard behind Belleair Town Hall. Fun classes to teach about nature
LARGO – Outdoor Explorers, hands-on nature activities, will be offered the second Saturday of each month, 2 to 3:30 p.m., at the George C. McGough Nature Park. The program, sponsored by Largo Recreation Parks & Arts Department, is designed for children in grades first to fifth. The cost is $3 with a resident recreation card; $3.75 with a nonresident card and $6.75 without a card. The park is at 11901 146th St. N. Call 518-3047.

Walking Club counts the miles
ST. PETE BEACH – The Walking Club meets on Fridays from 8:30 to 11 a.m. at the St. Pete Beach Recreation Center. The group takes scenic walks around the county and has brunches. Meet new friends and walk together for the best of health. All ages and genders are welcome. The number of miles walked will be recorded, and at the end of the walking club season awards will be given to everyone. The cost is $4 a month. Brooker Creek guided hikes
TARPON SPRINGS – Brooker Creek Preserve provides free guided hikes on Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in its 8,000+ acres. The hikes enable the general public to discover how the land has changed over time while exploring Pinellas County’s “Wildest Place.” Call 453-6800, as pre-registration is required. Weedon Island Preserve guided hikes
ST. PETERSBURG – Weedon Island Preserve offers free guided hikes on Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The volunteer-led guided hikes offer the general public a chance to examine the best of our cultural and environmental attributes. Call 453-6500, as pre-registration is required. The Center is located at 1800 Weedon Drive N.E.

Kayak tour of Clam Bayou Nature Park
GULFPORT – Kayak Nature Adventures offers 2-hour guided kayak tours Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 7:15 a.m., from the kayak landing at Clam Bayou Nature Park. The nature park and estuary provides several environments – from the upland natural vegetation, marsh and mangrove forests, to the deeper waters of Boca Ciega Bay. These areas provide habitat and food to a variety of species such as fiddler crabs, clams, wading birds, small animals, dolphins and manatees. Some restoration projects for Clam Bayou have been completed in Gulfport and St. Petersburg and more are planned for the future. Reservations are required. Wednesday evening walks
TARPON SPRINGS - Take a pleasant evening stroll and learn the ways many living things are adapted to make the best use of the twilight hour on Wednesdays, 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Brooker Creek Preserve, 3940 Keystone Road, Tarpon Springs. Many animals are most active at dawn and dusk, the time when nature’s day shift has ended but the night shift has yet to begin. Best for families with children ages 10 and up. Free.
