Congratulations to Mila, a three-legged pit bull mix, and Tampa Bay Newspapers February Pet of the Month photo contest winner.
Her human mom, Inga Martinez, adopted her from Pinellas County Animal Services, where she volunteers. Mila is now 2 years old and was adopted a year ago on Halloween.
Even though she only has three legs, she still runs just as fast or faster than her four-legged buddies. Mila is a very athletic and fun dog. She was picked up as a stray with several old breaks in her front leg that had grown back wrong, so the leg had to be amputated, Martinez said.
After the amputation, she spent 10 days in a wonderful foster home, and a few days later, Martinez adopted her.
Mila loves her new home, where she also has an 11-year-old shepherd mix doggy brother, Roxy. They have a blast playing together, riding in the car and going for walks.
Martinez said that after spending time with Mila, she has a pretty good idea how she got the breaks in her leg. The way Mila reacts to sticks, empty paper towel rolls, brooms, or anything that looks like a bat makes Martinez suspect that she was beaten.
“I make sure she never sees any objects that look anything like what could be used as a bat. I will make sure she never has to be afraid again,” Martinez said.
As Pet of the Month winner, Mila has won a $25 gift certificate to either Largo Feed or Park Feed in Pinellas Park.
