LARGO – A ton of fun, complete with that much slobber, drool and fur, was the order of the day as Twedt’s Lanes on Seminole Boulevard hosted a fundraiser March 29 for the Newfoundland Club of Florida’s rescue efforts.
Newfie enthusiasts brought along their very large companion dogs for the event, as others bowled in a show of support for Twedt’s assistant manager, Lew Hall, who is himself a Newfie devotee, and delighted in getting acquainted with the gentle giants adored by most anyone who has ever been associated with the working dog breed.
A gathering of 25 Newfoundlands at one locale is quite a show-stealer.
Common questions among the Newfie-challenged, who aren’t familiar with the dog: “Wow, they must really eat a lot, huh?” (not as much as you might think for their size; they should not be allowed to get overweight); “Do they really slobber and drool a lot? (Ah, that’s a big yes, but nothing that abundant rags or washcloths can’t remedy); “Do they get along with children?” (yes, with their sweet disposition, Newfies love kids); and “Do they make good pets?” (absolutely, as long as you are well-educated on the breed, as they are not for everyone).
In just over two hours of bowling, $1,812 was raised for Newfoundland rescue efforts.
