LARGO – In recognition of National Homeless Animals Day and to find homes for hundreds of deserving pets, SPCA Tampa Bay is hosting an adoption event on Saturday, Aug. 16, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the shelter, 9099 130th Ave. N.

Millions of cats and dogs are surrendered to animal shelters across the United States annually. Each year in Pinellas County alone, 45,000 pets are relinquished to animal shelters, like the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Tampa Bay.

Each cat and dog adopted from the SPCA receives a free month’s supply of pet food, a 30-day pet health insurance policy, current vaccinations, spay or neuter surgery, microchip identification and a free behavior class. SPCA cat adopters will receive a free Cat Talk and Cat Care class on Saturday, Aug. 16, 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. This two-hour course will cover frisky feline behavior and basic cat health issues. The class is $10 for the public.

The shelter event Saturday also will include a cat Olympics.
